A Tribute to My Aunty Betty Although our family visits were infrequent and it is some years since our paths crossed, I cherish fond memories of Aunty Betty and her family, particularly while growing up. Whenever we visited, Aunty Betty and Uncle Jack always greeted us with much warmth and affection and Aunty Betty’s smile in particular would brighten any day. Aunty Betty’s house always seemed much bigger than ours and one in particular had a water view where the distant headlands appeared as large rocky islands to me (who lived in a regular suburban street surrounded only by many houses). While the adults talked, my sister, Jeanette, and I would play happily with our older cousins in the big rooms. Even when life dealt significant challenges, Aunty Betty seemed to accept them with grace and optimism, always hoping for the best outcome. After the loss of my Uncle Jack, Aunty Betty bravely uprooted herself in late life and moved to New Zealand to be close to her youngest son, Andrew, and his family. It was so heartening to learn that there Aunty Betty was able to enjoy an easier and more comfortable lifestyle under Andrew’s watchful eye. I will always remember Aunty Betty with warmth and much fondness. From photographs in Dad’s family albums, it is apparent she was a favourite with Jack’s sisters and they shared many happy times together. Please see included photograph of Aunty Elizabeth (L) with Aunty Betty (R). Together with my husband, Ross, I extend sincere condolences to Andrew and the rest of the Craig family, and now that Aunty Betty’s final life challenges are past, I pray that she will find much deserved rest and eternal peace.
