Dear Oma, I will always fondly remember the comfort of you calling us from the kitchen that it was time for hot chocolate and biscuits. I’d never felt more technologically advanced than when I’d help you find a channel on your new tv. Holidays spent at your house were always full of wonder, sneaking into the formal dining room that we weren’t allowed to play in, and staring at all your nick nacks and filling our nostrils with the smell of leather. You were stern and gentle at the same time, stoic in every sense of the word. If I picture you in my head I always imagine your laugh and the way you would say “ya”. You, had the innate ability to make me feel like the favourite grandchild, even though I’m. sure you made the others all feel the same. Until I see you again, Dag Oma I love you Theo

Dear Oma, The things I remember the most are the food we ate around the table with you and Opa - you always telling us to have another olly bolla or biscuit or hot chocolate and me greedily saying yes until my stomach felt like it would burst. I remember running around the farm in too-big gumboots, and the excitement of arriving school-holidays to the house, the smells of wood furniture and the carpet and the sunroom. You always fed us and hugged us and gave us a place to call our home too. I was always so proud of my Dutch heritage, and having to explain when I talked about you to my friends that Oma meant grandmother. I’m thankful that you are my Oma, that you have been my Oma and are now my Oma in heaven. Thank you for the family you gave me. I’m here because of you, and Scott and I love you, and our memories will continue to breathe life into your legacy through each of your family here. We love you Oma. (Rosemary Vink)
