I write this tribute as the former Mayor of Whangārei, former President of Whangārei Native Forest and Bird Protection Society, and as a friend. David, your contribution to the fields of ornithology, conservation and education are legendary. Your rediscovery of the Chatham Island Taiko tops the list of accomplishments. However, your ability to pass on your immense knowledge of all things "bird" and inspire future generations adds immensely to your legacy. You will be relieved to be reunited with your beloved Ruth. Davids persistent work to identify map and conserve the nesting sites of the Chatham taiko is an important story in New Zealand Ornithology. His legacy endures in an increasing population and more sophisticated management to understand the pattern of taiko biology. This story shows the importance of individuals working with our birds to understand them and the role that citizens have in ornithology and conservation for our birds.
