He Panui tēnei mai i a Haven Falls ki Auckland
E ngā mana, e ngā reo, o tēnā hapū, o tēnā iwi, tēnei te mihi kia koutou katoa.Bereavement Panui on behalf of the Scorey whanau, regarding the passing of their beloved Matriarch, Margaret Scorey. On Sunday, right on wine time at 5pm, Margaret Scorey (McKinnon) gained her wings while surrounded by her whānau at home on Waiheke Island. Sunrise: 4 October 1925 Sunset: 1 October 2023 What an amazing journey she had. Born in Glasgow in the tenement houses, growing up crossing the Glasgow Green daily with her seven siblings. She served with the WAAFs and was deployed to Egypt and Cyprus, before leaving Britain in 1951 as part of a Royal Air Force exchange, arriving in Wellington Harbour in June 1951 on the SS Atlantis as one of “The Ninety-Nine”. She started a life here in New Zealand, having a family, moving between Wellington, New Plymouth, Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga, being involved with the RSA and the choir, and bought a batch on Waiheke Island in 1964 which would later become home for our whānau. She spent most of her last ten years living in Auckland close to her whānau before moving in with us at home on Waiheke Island for the last year and half. Many times we were told this is it, but Mum / Gran always had other ideas and defied the Doctor’s analysis. That’s who she was, a fighter, a survivor, a strong independent Scottish woman who was full of love for those around her. Our hearts are heavy and we have lost the matriarch of our whānau. Thank you to everyone for all their love and support (especially over the last year and a half). A celebration of Mum / Gran / Margaret’s life will take place this Friday at 12pm, Waikumete Cemetery and Crematorium (Chapel 2) in Glen Eden. For anyone who wishes to attend all we ask is you bring a smile and wear something green which was her favourite colour.
