Tributes

I am very saddened to learn of Bill's passing. Bill was such a lovely, extremely capable, insightful, wise man who did so much for Hospice and his wider community. It was a wonderful privilege to work alongside him as I have fond memories of him when he bravely stepped in as CEO for Hibiscus Hospice for an interim period. What a wonderful legacy he has left behind.

I’ve known Bill since 2016 when I came to Auckland and joined the Rotary Club of Takapuna North. I instantly liked him for his humour and wisdom and of course, hugely admired his super organised work ethic and immense contributions, as a Rotarian. He was a great example of someone living life to the fullest in retirement, and contributing to multiple community projects whilst at the same time fostering many friendships across all demographics. RIP Bill.

I regret not being able to be here today for my old friend Bill. I am teaching children again and it seems they have locked me in. I met Bill over a great idea we shared to help some of our really deserving Far North students from Oturu school. We wanted to create funding to help them to board, and be well educated away from their stressful living conditions. Following the success of previous students we set up the Rangatiratanga trust with his Rotary group with a goal to sending highly educated adults back to help build the Kaitaia community. This connection began with his rotary club well over 10 years ago and was ongoing. Even after he left the club he continued to drive this cause with me. Our meetings were face to face; so he came up to Kaitaia dragging club members along, or came to stay at my place, or I went to stay with him. Typically we would enjoy an evening of each others' company with food, and wine. The actual meeting would take place over breakfast the next day, typically well organised by Bill; for about 20 minutes! He connected Ross to the school and we planted a new orchard with trees Ross provided. There are 40 of those trees fruiting today. We were on the phone last week planning a visit to meet and finalise the wind up of the trust. Bill became a lifetime friend. I haven't finished the last jar of comquote marmalade he gave me or the walnut liqueur. The rum didn't last as long! I my partner Josie and I will be missing a dear friend. Bill got things done with no fuss, and a lot of fun. He expanded my world, which is now a lot less rich with his passing! Fraser Smith. "Retired" Principal. Oturu School.
