My earliest and fondest memories are of the times spent with Uncle Tony and Aunty Barbara and my beautiful cousins Tracey, Kelly and Erin on their property at Aka Aka. We kids had the freedom of the farm and beyond; for us "city kids" it was bliss! Tony was truly a "man for all seasons". No matter the weather, he was always out in it - hard-working, wiry, nuggety - Tony revelled in the outdoor life. No doubt contributing to his long life, being remembered and celebrated today. He was a man of many dimensions: strong in his opinions, passionate in his politics, a keen mind and intellect, and a deep knowledge of the land and horticulture. As the years have passed, we cousins saw less of him and the tyranny of distance between Australia and New Zealand was felt. But my memories make a land I inhabit and Uncle Tony will always be there, pipe in hand, eyes crinkled against the brilliant sunshine, looking to the horizon and the weather, deep in thought. My deepest love to Tracey, Kelly and Erin as they farewell their father. Your family in Australia are sending our love and deepest sympathy to you all. Vale Uncle Tony 💔♥️
I spent quite a few school holidays at Uncle Tony’s farm. Absolutely loved it. I had my uncle, aunt, cousins and grandparents all in one place, doesn’t get any better than that. Picked a few tomatoes too but one thing I learned quickly is that no matter how hard you put your back into it Uncle Tony would be well ahead of you. Great example to a young kid of what a work ethic should look like. My heart goes out to Tracy, Kelly and Erin at this time. May God bring you the peace that passes all understanding at this difficult time of loss. God bless.
Farewell Uncle Tony, You lived a very full and long life. I would always tell people very proudly that you were the NZ Don Burke of Camellias. Your talent with horticulture was unsurpassed. Living overseas has meant little contact with the extended family but I have fond memories of us all being together for various occasions with you normally perched somewhere smoking your pipe and commentating on the action. God bless ❤️
