Hard to imagine that you are gone Ariel forever in my heart my longtime friend. I don’t have many friends and Ariel was one who I met in my early twenties and our friendship was one of those whereby it didn’t matter how long we didn’t see or talk we had that shared history that has bound us forever. Straight forward, honest, warm and so generous with your interests, thank you Ariel for widening my view of the world, what it offered and what might be, when we were young. Ariel was one of the person i met on my first day at Monash as a postdoc. He was very accessible and always up for a chat and a laught in the Caulfield cuisine. He was brillant and had a great vision for the Energy research at Monash, always trying to link industry with the researcher in order to really have a real impact on the World, to get the research out of the lab. I particularly remember an evening we spent having a drink and a barbecue with other people from fit. Your son came and we start singing and playing the guitar. This is one of the great memories of my time in Australia. This is a great loss and we will really miss you.

Our paths kept crossing over the last few years first at AusNet, then at the grant committee we were both members of and then at EnergyLab. We had our last catch up just over a month ago at Monash, where we shared lunch and chatted about solving the big challenges in the energy transition. You will be missed not only for you and the vibrant person you are but for your genius that we needed to help us solve the energy transition and climate crisis. I met Ariel some 30 years ago. Ariel was a wonderful human being. He was a most warm, intelligent, modest and caring man. Ariel was a wonderful father. He made a big positive impact in a number of areas and is sure to very well remembered by many. Tragically, his life ended far too early.

We have many memories in the last 15 years.. from becoming my PhD examiner at UQ in 2009, sharing same podium as invited keynote speakers on renewable energy issues, till initiating research collaboration between our institution. Ariel I remember that first year in Auckland University - that small clique of us who were accelerated into 2nd year Linear Algebra and Calculus direct from high school. You also were in my direct to 2nd year Physics classes as well - a kindred spirit, although ultimately, you went the harder path through Physics - and I chose the easier route of Computer Science. Those vacations we spent, playing cards until 2 a.m. in the morning, copious imbibing, betting with our 5 and 10 cent pieces. It was a fun time, and I always remember those moments, even now, 35 years later. I remember your deep knowledge of Star Trek, your “That’s Mister Face to you” jokes. You lived a strong and passionate life, and as it’s said “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.” Your ripples will continue for a long time, Mr Liebman.

I first met Ariel in 2009 and he has popped in and out of my life ever since. He was the first friend of Joern Guy's (my now hubby) that I ever met and I could instantly understand why they had a deep friendship and connection. Ariel's intelligence, wit, love of fine food and dark chocoloate was second to none. We have lost an amazing human however after reading the tributes below, I have no doubt that Ariel's legacy will live on. Ariel, I feel like I didn't know you particularly well and reading all these amazing tributes makes me especially sorry for that. I cry for the great loss your family, friends, colleagues and the community are experiencing with your passing. I saw your great passion for your work, mainly through involvement in organising the Monash delegations to the UN climate change conferences (COP). I remember your drive to always push harder, to take Monash further, and your comment in one particular meeting on how you would only focus on the things that will bring real change, because, otherwise, "what's the point?" Your wisdom shone through and will live on. Rest in peace.

Some moments in life radiate, fill you with the appreciation of the possible and make you look to the future. In my life a lot of those moments were, unlikely, product of an Ariel-created lunch-time institution called the curry club, where a wild cross section of people would sit down to the hottest foods, the most bespoke beers and with limited shade from the Queensland sun to discuss anything from punk to politics, photons to philosophy, Futurama and beyond. Those were moments of the shared dream that is the immense expanse a brain can create when it reaches for the far idea. One can take solace in the fact that these moments happened, offer gratitude through practice for being part of them, and work soul and brain so that one offers to others what Ariel has offered to us: intellectual spark, practical responsibility, indomitable humour, friendship and compassion. This is truly disheartening and shocking—I still can't believe the reality that Ariel won't be among us anymore. I am in absolute shock to lose a friend, brother, and my fatherly figure. Probably the sincerest man on earth to all he knew. I have been orphaned. I have been asking your friends if they can be my Ariel. I realised that tens of people together cannot be you. It's an irreplaceable loss to the world. I talked everything with you, ranging from energy to biology, physics, economics, politics, philosophy, history, finance, religion, cricket, computer vision, and my very personal life. You always offer an insight that would fix the problem at hand. Too often, you will fix it for me! I still remember that how I randomly asked you to meet off LinkedIn and you said yes, and in the very first meeting, we ended up discussing politics along with energy - that was probably some 15+ years ago! I remember your 50th birthday, my regular visits to your homes in Balwyn, Box Hill and Elwood. You opened your office and home doors for me. I remember how we did energy consultancy together for good 4 years as Strategic Energy Market Services (SEMS). When United Energy offered me to come and work for them on cutting edge new energy transition you encouraged me to do so at the cost of stopping SEMS. This demonstrates your selflessness. You always knew my interest better than I did! You are someone with superpowers. When you advised me, I took your opinion and drop mine if I disagreed with you. I am highly disciplined with my food, and I do not eat sweets. However, when you offered sweets, I would take them and eat many until you ask me to stop. Talking of food, I still remember during SEMS days you came to my home in Thomastown and eat Nihari full of chillies! You absolutely loved Pakistani food! Your superpower was to initiate right ambitions and diminish wrong ones in me. My gut feeling was saying that you were at the cusp of solving world's biggest problems! I'll keep an eye on Shreejan and Rog for you and find other tasks for Rhian to fill all the spare time she now has without needing to hassle you for your credit card receipts. I have only recently met Ariel but what a generous and wise man. The world is poorer for his early departure. Condolences to the family.

I am deeply pained and heartbroken by the loss of my PhD supervisor, whose wisdom and guidance shaped my academic journey profoundly. Ariel has been my co-supervisor for two years. He always acted like a friend and gave me a lot of professional advice in the energy field. I extend my sincerest condolences to their family during this challenging time. Their remarkable legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives they've touched.

So difficult to accept and so sad to even contemplate. You have been such a force Ariel, and extremely knowledgeable and passionate colleague, full of energy and vision for a better world. And a wonderful friend, warm, caring, funny and always ready for a chat over brunch. You leave left a huge and sudden void Ariel. I will so miss you!

So much humour, energy, and enthusiasm lost too soon. But so many good memories. You will be sorely missed my friend.

Ariel, you were truly one of a kind, whose frank opinions, relentless energy, intellect, and, above all, kindness will be truly missed. You have left too early and too sudden. My thoughts are with your family.

Good bye my mentor! Thanks for all your help in guiding me for my first 8 months as a new academic in Monash University. We will always remember your jokes, and your chocolates for the energy meetings! We will continue your passion to advance and prepare Australia for the future energy/climate challenges!

I am deeply saddened hearing about Ariel's passing. It was not so long ago that we met at a ZOOM meeting and as always Ariel was full of energy, ideas, deep knowledge and good humour. I remember him so well as a PhD student at UQ! I also remember many discussions that we had many years ago! We will miss Ariel deeply and remember him always.

I'm so incredibly lucky to have been able to spend all that time with Ariel. He was hugely supportive and generous. Truly saddened by the passing of great friend.

I'm just so SO gutted. Ariel is the definition of mensch. He is so kind, and open, and such a good friend. So many walks around the neighbourhood and getting coffee. I'm absolutely gutted.
