Tributes

Hard to imagine that you are gone Ariel forever in my heart my longtime friend. I don’t have many friends and Ariel was one who I met in my early twenties and our friendship was one of those whereby it didn’t matter how long we didn’t see or talk we had that shared history that has bound us forever. We lost a great man who had so much more to give I am gutted Rest in Peace Ayelet

Ayelet Rinon

Straight forward, honest, warm and so generous with your interests, thank you Ariel for widening my view of the world, what it offered and what might be, when we were young. Thank you for my love of Middle Eastern food, dancing to Blue Monday, my understanding of a good and passionate life, for being a friend. The ripples go on. Wish it were possible we could have more time, wish you had more time.

Alex Nield

A wonderful human being. Researcher, friend, collaborator. Generous, kind and caring. Ariel will be sorely missed. In the early days of the Australia Indonesia Centre at Monash University, when we needed research stars to step forward, Ariel was among those who showed the way. We all enjoyed his company, his wisdom and his humility.

Paul Ramadge

I don't quite know what to write other than to marvel at how many people have been moved to offer such wonderful words of tribute to our friend Ariel. He was an unconstrained force of nature -- energetic, curious, boundless and (let's face it) a little chaotic. And that is why we all loved him and that's why we all struggle with the thought that his force of personality is no longer in our lives. I will forever miss our looooong breakfasts where we schemed and plotted about how to fast-track the energy reformation. Gabrielle, Max, Suzie - I wish you and all the family, "Long-life".

Ron Ben-David

For six years I enjoyed every opportunity to discuss with Ariel what the world can do. better in the energy space… we also discussed a lot about family and music. I was so shocked to hear of Ariel’s passing. So clever, kind, inspirational and passionate. Rest in peace and know your wisdom and commitment to change will continue through all who knew you.

Lynne Payne

Farewell Ariel, you were always generous with your time, knowledge and good humour. The fight for a safe climate and the energy transition lost a great leader. You will be greatly missed by all who have been touched by your positivity and enthusiasm.

Wei Sue

Farewell, Ariel, a force for good, forging genuine human connections and inspiring us to do more for climate "before it's all over." Friend, mentor, and colleague, he offered practical and meaningful support when folks needed it the most, regardless of rank or stature. There are countless things to reminisce and miss, including our daily chats and the occasional spirited debates, always ending in laughter and agreement. We have lost an inclusive leader and friend, one of a kind, but Ariel's challenge and legacy lives on. To Gab, Max, and family, find joy in knowing Ariel was deeply loved professionally. May he rest in peace, leaving a legacy of love and a call to action.

Shreejan Pandey

How terribly, terribly sad to hear. Ariel was an exceptionally thoughtful and energetic soul. Expertise, commitment, decency. What a loss. My deepest condolences to all who were close to Ariel.

Sebastian Thomas

Dearest Ariel, We are so sad to hear of your passing. Your laughter and warmth brightened every room you walked into and put smiles upon the faces of all you met. Your stories, contributions and energy made every engagement at the AIC more fun and memorable. We will miss you my friend and you live on in all of us carrying your beautiful memory. Elly AIC Monash University

Elly Patterson

You were the best of us Ariel, and we are all poorer without you. I miss you, mate. Deepest condolences to your family.

Daniel Harabor

Sincere condolences to Ariel’s family and community. I greatly enjoyed meeting Ariel in the context of a university working group we both participated in. What a great energy for an energy scholar - we had two inspiring conversations in which we shared stories of migration & Aotearoa. Haere Ra my friend!

Jacqui True

Ever since we met in 2011, you created a lasting impression - passionate about climate change, driven and focused! Every day of the last week I was hoping that a miracle would happen and we would see you here again. There will be no more taps on your office door to say hi or discuss a matter. My condolences to the family who can take some consolation from the messages that Ariel was so loved. You will not be physically present here, but your legacy will remain, Ariel. Rest in peace, my friend.

Sankar Bhattacharya

My deepest condolences. Rest in Peace, Prof. Ariel Liebman.

Nugraha Seah Lai Heng

Ariel was one of the person i met on my first day at Monash as a postdoc. He was very accessible and always up for a chat and a laught in the Caulfield cuisine. He was brillant and had a great vision for the Energy research at Monash, always trying to link industry with the researcher in order to really have a real impact on the World, to get the research out of the lab. I particularly remember an evening we spent having a drink and a barbecue with other people from fit. Your son came and we start singing and playing the guitar. This is one of the great memories of my time in Australia. This is a great loss and we will really miss you.

Arnaud Prouzeau

Our paths kept crossing over the last few years first at AusNet, then at the grant committee we were both members of and then at EnergyLab. We had our last catch up just over a month ago at Monash, where we shared lunch and chatted about solving the big challenges in the energy transition. You will be missed not only for you and the vibrant person you are but for your genius that we needed to help us solve the energy transition and climate crisis. My sincere condolences to your family, friends and colleagues. Taken too soon.

Megan Fisher

I met Ariel some 30 years ago. Ariel was a wonderful human being. He was a most warm, intelligent, modest and caring man. Ariel was a wonderful father. He made a big positive impact in a number of areas and is sure to very well remembered by many. Tragically, his life ended far too early.

Frank Peter Carew

RIP my dear friend Ariel.. You’re such a great friend.. We have many memories in the last 15 years.. from becoming my PhD examiner at UQ in 2009, sharing same podium as invited keynote speakers on renewable energy issues, till initiating research collaboration between our institution. Our deepest condolences to the family and friends in Aussie and Auckland on your loss. We will definitely miss your enthusiasm, passion, and kindness.

Bachtiar

Ariel I remember that first year in Auckland University - that small clique of us who were accelerated into 2nd year Linear Algebra and Calculus direct from high school. You also were in my direct to 2nd year Physics classes as well - a kindred spirit, although ultimately, you went the harder path through Physics - and I chose the easier route of Computer Science. Those vacations we spent, playing cards until 2 a.m. in the morning, copious imbibing, betting with our 5 and 10 cent pieces. It was a fun time, and I always remember those moments, even now, 35 years later. I remember your deep knowledge of Star Trek, your “That’s Mister Face to you” jokes. You lived a strong and passionate life, and as it’s said “No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away.” Your ripples will continue for a long time, Mr Liebman.

Evan Torrie

I first met Ariel in 2009 and he has popped in and out of my life ever since. He was the first friend of Joern Guy's (my now hubby) that I ever met and I could instantly understand why they had a deep friendship and connection. Ariel's intelligence, wit, love of fine food and dark chocoloate was second to none. We have lost an amazing human however after reading the tributes below, I have no doubt that Ariel's legacy will live on. Thank you Ariel for your contributions to the world we live in and much love to your family. It was a pleasure knowing you x

Susan

Ariel, I feel like I didn't know you particularly well and reading all these amazing tributes makes me especially sorry for that. I cry for the great loss your family, friends, colleagues and the community are experiencing with your passing. I saw your great passion for your work, mainly through involvement in organising the Monash delegations to the UN climate change conferences (COP). I remember your drive to always push harder, to take Monash further, and your comment in one particular meeting on how you would only focus on the things that will bring real change, because, otherwise, "what's the point?" Your wisdom shone through and will live on. Rest in peace.

Erica

Some moments in life radiate, fill you with the appreciation of the possible and make you look to the future. In my life a lot of those moments were, unlikely, product of an Ariel-created lunch-time institution called the curry club, where a wild cross section of people would sit down to the hottest foods, the most bespoke beers and with limited shade from the Queensland sun to discuss anything from punk to politics, photons to philosophy, Futurama and beyond. Those were moments of the shared dream that is the immense expanse a brain can create when it reaches for the far idea. One can take solace in the fact that these moments happened, offer gratitude through practice for being part of them, and work soul and brain so that one offers to others what Ariel has offered to us: intellectual spark, practical responsibility, indomitable humour, friendship and compassion. Vale, Ariel; Vivite Sequentes

There are few words to express the surreal, heartbreaking experience of losing our dear colleague and friend Ariel. My sincere condolences to Ariel’s family for the loss of a dear one. The world has lost a great advocate for a sustainable fuutre; we have lost a generous, bighearted hearted soul; a true friend and colleague who lightened up every room with his energy and zinging intellect. I will miss our lively arguments about energy and climate, laughs, and so much more. Rest well in peace.

Rowena Cantley-Smith

“It is not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.” – Eckhart Tolle. Ariel, you never spent a minute waiting. Such a joy, the countless moments spent LIVING with you. Goodbye my friend. I will love you and miss you, always.

Daniel Coleman

Thank you for all the support and help you have always given me, dear Ariel. You were one of the most gentle and friendly people I have ever known. I will always miss you. Rest in peace

Ariel was one of the first people I met at Monash Uni when I joined 5 years ago and such a wonderful colleague - so full of life, energy and ideas. I'll miss our conversations, collaboration and his amazing presence in our Energy Institute, Faculty and projects. I hope we can continue to honour the outstanding legacy and example Ariel gifted us all, with his unique combination of intelligence, commitment, generosity, kindness and inspiration.

We missed your laughs and jokes, Ariel. You are always so kind to students and everyone in the office. Throughout my whole PhD study, there always your appearance. Burger Fridays, beers after work and snacks shared from you, they are all deep in our memory. Rest in peace, Ariel.

Zhe (Mike) Chen

Ariel, you are a friend and an inspiration. I miss you dearly.

Pierre Le Bodic

You were and are a beautiful person Ariel. Intelligent, sharp, witty, ethical, searching, dogmatic, to-the-point, and most of all, loving. I will carry what I've learnt from you and from knowing you to my last days. Every time I hug someone, I'll remember our hugs together.

Richard Price

Dear Ariel and family and colleagues Such a terrible terrible shock and great sadness at losing such a wonderful colleague and friend. Ariel's enthusiasm and devotion to his work, family, friends, students and colleagues will be sadly missed but not forgotten. I enjoyed so much the opportunities we had to discuss a (very) wide range of topics. I wish we had had the opportunity to collaborate more on many projects. I enjoyed reminiscing about Auckland and New Zealand a lot too! Thank you for brightening our lives and fighting for all of our futures. Rest in peace. John

John Grundy

Thank you Ariel...for sharing your life on this earth, for inspiring us with your faith and work. Shalom!

Amanda

Ariel, your passing is a profound loss to us all. Your light shone brightly, and your impact on energy industry will last. My deepest condolences to your family and loved ones. Rest in peace.

Jiangshan Yu

It’s hard to believe Ariel is gone. Always a shining example of connection and connecting. We worked together to get RACE, the energy initiative, off the ground and while I promptly moved onto other things he regularly gave me updates - and they were always exciting. He laid important foundations for our work in Indonesia and is remembered for his contributions there, as a new important is about to begin for Monash here I will remember Ariel siting on my verandah looking at the hill and discussing pumped storage solutions. An idea I shall one day implement Shalom my friend

Edo

Thank you Ariel, for forming the hearth and soul of so many of the groups and organisations that you were a part of. Whether it was talking about one of the many topics within your expertise, research that was new to you, or something completely out of left field, your genuine curiosity, insight, and quick wit always managed to lighten up the room and make people feel valued. I will particularly miss the opinionated discussions about science fiction novels. My condolences to Ariel's family. We will do our best to continue Ariel's work to care for the environment and further sustainable energy sources.

Jip

We will miss you so much. Your wisdom and your friendship. Your passion and your dedication to making the world a better place were a true inspiration and there is a huge void now. We will give our best to honour your memory by keeping this passion alive. You shouldn’t have had to leave so early. My thoughts are with your family.

Bernd

Such shocking news. Ariel, you will be deeply missed. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Ariel's family.

Hamid Rezatofighi

Rest in peace, dear Ariel. Your wisdom, kindness, and scholarly legacy will be cherished always, and your impact on my life will be remembered with the utmost reverence. We will miss you! -- Canchen Jiang His PhD student

Canchen Jiang

Ariel was not only a colleague but a good friend. He was never short of an idea for a new project regarding the advancement of the energy transition. Technical, regulatory or economic - he had an idea or commentary for every aspect of the industry. i will miss our email banter and coffee discussions whenever we were able to catch up. I will miss your ideas, passion and sense of humour. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends who will miss you deeply

Stuart Johnston

This is truly disheartening and shocking—I still can't believe the reality that Ariel won't be among us anymore. He was more than a colleague; Ariel was an exceptional individual, embodying qualities of hard work, being very supportive, and inclusivity. Ariel passionately advocated for environmental preservation, channelling his expertise and research towards enhancing sustainability in our future energy systems. The Monash Energy Institute feels like an orphan without him. I find it difficult to think about passing by his room late in the afternoon and realizing that the office light is no longer on, and Ariel is not standing there:((. Rest in peace, dear Ariel:( His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. I extend my deepest condolences to his family for the profound loss they are experiencing.

Adel

The world is a lesser place without Ariel's brilliant, jovial, committed and warm personality. I will miss his passion and drive most of all. The world needs more people with his level of commitment to tackle the climate change crisis. His absence leaves a gaping hole in the social and intellectual life of the Faculty of Informatiion Technology. He will be profoundly missed by us. My deepest condolences to his family.

Peter Stuckey

Ariel, you made us have hope for the future. I will miss our conversations about politics, climate change and the vagaries of Monash. And I will miss running into you at the Elwood market or when walking down Ormond Rd. Rest in peace

Kim Marriott

Dear Ariel, thanks for being such a great friend to so many of us. You will be sadly missed.

John

I'll miss your bright ideas, caring ways, and the guidance you shared. Thank you for being a great mentor and friend. Rest in peace, Ariel.

Saeede

Ariel you were one of a kind. Gone too soon. You had so much more to give. Thanks for your tireless work for a safe climate and net zero transition. I always enjoyed our time together and appreciated your intellect, humour, generosity and kindness. Wishing your family and loved ones a long life. Take strength in knowing that Ariel was an amazing human being who's memory, legacy and impact lives on.

Darren Sharp

For the last few years every Saturday morning I would check my WhatsApp chat to see if/when Ariel and I are catching up for a coffee and chat. Outside the work, energy market talks, business, etc., we were painting a picture of the world as it should be. A picture from 100,000 meters altitude. That painting is now incomplete, waiting for the next brushstroke. The loss is sohhh painful. I will continue to work on this painting, imagining Ariel's drawing his paintbrush, using his unique and magnificent palette. I will forever remember you Ariel. I will forever bless the forces that made our space-time lines meet. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה

Yochai Glick

Ariel was a kind, caring and generous colleague and person who devoted his life to the energy transition. His ability to make connections and bring people together was something I always admired in him. His legacy will carry on with those of us who new him. Deepest condolences to Ariel's family and friends.

Yolande Strengers

Dearest Ariel and Family, feel so sad when colleagues from Monash University shared this saddened and shocking news on Ariel's passing. We still remember very well how Ariel super engagingly on stage shared with us about Sustainable Energy System in a guest lecture program early this year at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa Banten, Indonesia. On behalf of the Rector, allow me express our deepest condolences and sympathies to Ariel's family and friends. Warm Regards, Udi Samanhudi

Udi Samanhudi

Deepest sympathy and condolences to Ariel's family. I will miss him personally, as colleague and a friend, and his passing leaves a gaping void within the Faculty, Institute and Monash community broadly. Ariel's passion and commitment to driving our energy informatics research was inspiring, as he constantly challenged us all, and me as a leader, to set our sights higher, and make a real difference in the transition to sustainable energy. He will be greatly missed. Taken far too soon, his was certainly a 'life well lived'.

Ann Nicholson

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Ariel's passing. This morning his office is dark and empty. A stark contrast to the norm – I was so used to seeing him standing there at his desk, working away! Ariel always had time for a smile and a chat. These shall be missed especially. My heartfelt sympathy to his family for their loss.

Alan

Cannot believe you are no longer with us. You will be sorely missed. Have loved your passion and great support - always available at the end of the phone to discuss frustrations with the slow moving energy system. We will keep working on it. Sending condolences to all of Ariel's' family. A great advocate and the world is a little smaller without him. Peta

He was very passionate, which you could feel in every conversation we had. Didn't matter if it was about work or private matters. It will be strange walking past his empty office, still full of his work.

Over the last few years, every Saturday morning I would check my WhatsApp chat to see if and when Ariel and I are meeting for a coffee and chat. We were together painting a picture of the world as tit should be, from 100,000 meters altitude. That picture is now incomplete. The loss is painful beyond description. I will continue to work on this painting, imagining Ariel draw his paintbrush using his incredible palette. We are so shocked and saddened by your passing Ariel. From our first meeting at the AIC it was such a wonderful joy to work with you. You were so humble and engaged by the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues here and in Indonesia. I was so lucky to also have you as a colleague at FIT and and learn about all the great work you and your team had on the go. I am just so terribly sad that we won't be able to do this again but I know your warmth and humanity permeated out into your students, colleagues and friends, so you will always be with us. My last selfie with Ariel! Imad

I am in absolute shock to lose a friend, brother, and my fatherly figure. Probably the sincerest man on earth to all he knew. I have been orphaned. I have been asking your friends if they can be my Ariel. I realised that tens of people together cannot be you. It's an irreplaceable loss to the world. I talked everything with you, ranging from energy to biology, physics, economics, politics, philosophy, history, finance, religion, cricket, computer vision, and my very personal life. You always offer an insight that would fix the problem at hand. Too often, you will fix it for me! I still remember that how I randomly asked you to meet off LinkedIn and you said yes, and in the very first meeting, we ended up discussing politics along with energy - that was probably some 15+ years ago! I remember your 50th birthday, my regular visits to your homes in Balwyn, Box Hill and Elwood. You opened your office and home doors for me. I remember how we did energy consultancy together for good 4 years as Strategic Energy Market Services (SEMS). When United Energy offered me to come and work for them on cutting edge new energy transition you encouraged me to do so at the cost of stopping SEMS. This demonstrates your selflessness. You always knew my interest better than I did! You are someone with superpowers. When you advised me, I took your opinion and drop mine if I disagreed with you. I am highly disciplined with my food, and I do not eat sweets. However, when you offered sweets, I would take them and eat many until you ask me to stop. Talking of food, I still remember during SEMS days you came to my home in Thomastown and eat Nihari full of chillies! You absolutely loved Pakistani food! Your superpower was to initiate right ambitions and diminish wrong ones in me. My gut feeling was saying that you were at the cusp of solving world's biggest problems! Well beyond energy and climate change, and Yochai agrees! We will keep you alive in our memories! Imad - Friend, Brother, Son.

Muhammad Imad Khan

I'm still struggling to accept the news. You will be missed so much, Ariel, as a friend, a colleague, and an important figure to the Australian renewable energy endeavour! Good bye and RIP.

Dinh Phung

We have lost an energetic and passionate energy transition warrior and friend way to soon. Rest in peace Ariel

David Hill

For all our encounters were brief, they were rich, I wanted more, I expected more and now, this 'more' is no longer. Your passing is sudden, unexpected and untimely. You will be missed. May you continue to shine, wherever you are Ariel.

Thomas

One of the good guys...smart, funny... you will be missed. Those Zoom sessions helped many of us get through the height of the pandemic.

Charles Rendigs

Ariel, our little Monash Energy Institute team, just got so much smaller. Thank you for taking a chance on me in the new BD role. It was wonderful to learn so much about energy from you. I expect we will be starting our meetings 10 minutes late for a while, whilst we adjust to the fact that you are not in fact running late (but still had time to stop for coffee!!!) but won't be coming at all anymore. We might just put a cup of coffee on the table in your place. We got the review outcome you expected and so still have our BHAGS to pursue next year and beyond. I'll keep an eye on Shreejan and Rog for you and find other tasks for Rhian to fill all the spare time she now has without needing to hassle you for your credit card receipts. May your family be comforted by the fact that you were so obviously widely respected and loved. Sam

Samantha Lipscombe

I have only recently met Ariel but what a generous and wise man. The world is poorer for his early departure. Condolences to the family.

Lucy Allinson

I am deeply pained and heartbroken by the loss of my PhD supervisor, whose wisdom and guidance shaped my academic journey profoundly. Ariel has been my co-supervisor for two years. He always acted like a friend and gave me a lot of professional advice in the energy field. I extend my sincerest condolences to their family during this challenging time. Their remarkable legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives they've touched.

Jiarong Fan

So difficult to accept and so sad to even contemplate. You have been such a force Ariel, and extremely knowledgeable and passionate colleague, full of energy and vision for a better world. And a wonderful friend, warm, caring, funny and always ready for a chat over brunch. You leave left a huge and sudden void Ariel. I will so miss you!

Maria

So much humour, energy, and enthusiasm lost too soon. But so many good memories. You will be sorely missed my friend.

Tava Olsen

Ariel, you were truly one of a kind, whose frank opinions, relentless energy, intellect, and, above all, kindness will be truly missed. You have left too early and too sudden. My thoughts are with your family.

Rob Raven

We've lost a unique and passionate man with a deep interest in many topics with a desire to change to world. We will all miss you very much Ariel.

Bil Lilley

It's painful to lose Ariel so early in life. My memories will always be of the various trips we took together, and our deep conversations. I'm glad to have known him. My deepest condolences for his family.

David Plumpton

I am deeply saddened to hear about this loss. Ariel was a true believer in climate change and a champion of clean energy transition. It was a significant loss to the research and academic community. You are in my thoughts and prayers. My heartfelt condolences to Ariel’s family.

Lasantha

Ariel, you will be sorely missed. We will all miss your warmth and infectious energy and enthusiasm for life. You have been a great colleague and friend to us all. We will always remember the laughter we shared over your commentaries (many of them were indeed witty) and even some of the moments of frustration we shared in our collective work to advance energy transition in Indonesia. We will never forget how we marveled at your bottomless list of ideas and the endless stream of cafe lattes to our table the last time we caught up. A quick catch up turns into more than 3 hours of chatting and cracking jokes. Grateful to have spent that morning with. Good bye, my friend.

Adhityani Putri (Dhitri)

Good bye my mentor! Thanks for all your help in guiding me for my first 8 months as a new academic in Monash University. We will always remember your jokes, and your chocolates for the energy meetings! We will continue your passion to advance and prepare Australia for the future energy/climate challenges!

I am deeply saddened hearing about Ariel's passing. It was not so long ago that we met at a ZOOM meeting and as always Ariel was full of energy, ideas, deep knowledge and good humour. I remember him so well as a PhD student at UQ! I also remember many discussions that we had many years ago! We will miss Ariel deeply and remember him always.

I'm just so SO gutted. Ariel is the definition of mensch. He is so kind, and open, and such a good friend. So many walks around the neighbourhood and getting coffee. I'm absolutely gutted.

Ariel was a great colleague. He was so knowledgeable about many things. I treasure the conversations we had. He will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

Of course his knowledge of power systems and markets was exceptional, but what stood out the most for me, and that will miss the most, about Ariel was his humour and his positive energy. I am poorer from his shock passing, and richer for having known him. Gone far far too soon. What a significant loss to the energy community. My sincere condolences to his family and the rest of his friends.

Alan

Ariel was full of enthusiasm, energy and knowledge to make a difference in clean energy. Met through RACE CRC as a very humble intellectual. Immense loss to the research community in energy. My sincere condolences to the family and friends.

Dearest Ariel, the world seems smaller now. I will miss you dearly. You were always such a character - charming, genuine and provocative. Above all, you were also driven, pushing in your unique way for a better world, decarbonised of course. I promise you this, that we will keep fighting to realise such a world, and when we do, I will cheers you for the steps that you took to get us down that path. Rest in peace my friend.

Ariel was very passionate about the environment and action on climate change. He was also warm and funny and had at least one strong opinion about everything. We will miss him. He is a great loss to the energy and environmental community. Wishing the family our condolences and long life.

Like a father. Like a true friend. Like a life guide. Without him, I won’t be who I am now. My dear dear PhD supervisor. It was such a long time that we worked together. We saw each other’s growth. A very significant lost that I can hardly bare. Glad that he suffered less at the end. He will be forever missed.

I wish this was like one of those nightmares which disappear when we wake up. But, seemingly this time it is true :( Your passion for bringing a change into this world, your unending interest in connection with people regardless of their status, your humbleness, your positivity, your sense of humour in the most difficult moments were unique. You will be missed. My condolences to daughter and son for the loss of their great father.

Dear family, I was writing this over and over again trying to make some sence and coherence, but words feels pointless at this time. I will treasure our conversations, and silences. I'm feeling lucky I could call him a friend. Now only silence remained.

Assaf
