What a great cousin Lois was. In later years, when visiting the South Island from Wellington, I would get in touch with Lois and she would organise a family gathering so we could catch up. Unfortunately those visits could be 3 or 4 years apart. Growing up we enjoyed traveling from Greymouth to the Carpenter grandparents place at Fernside and teaming up with Aunt Jessie and the family. It was a unique experience staying in a cob house with an upstairs lined with very old newspapers, with no power, candles and lamps at night, pumped water, digging a weekly hole in the hard ground for the toilet disposal, making butter, swimming in the local river(if there was water?), various farm activities, etc. Lois was always the main leader.
