Peacefully in New Plymouth on Friday 5 September 2025, aged 90. Dearly loved daughter of the late George & Lillian Gernhoefer. Will be missed by all her family and friends. Messages to Tui’s family may be left on her tribute page at eagars.co.nz/tui or sent to 20 Frederick St Carterton. As Tui wished a private service has been held.

Ms Gerny we affectionately called her. I had her for 2 years in a row at westown primary school in the 90s. She is and always was my favourite teacher, she also was my older brother’s teacher too. She had a harsh voice but she was also very funny. I remember her scolding the trouble makers in class that liked to push her buttons, her voice was like thunder, but she never fell for it and those troublemakers she always left them smiling at the end of the day. She encouraged me with my art and that’s is something I held dear throughout my life. Now I hit my 40th year I can’t remember many teachers, but I never forgotten you Miss Gerny. Rest in love
Miss Gernoefer was my first teacher at Pihama School. I remember her fondly after all these years. You left your make with me and several of my siblings. Rest in peace Miss Gernoefer.
Miss Gernhoefer was my Year 4 teacher in the 90s, and I’ll never forget her. Strict, scary, and utterly unforgettable — she ruled with an iron fist and expected the best from us. I was a troublemaker and ended up banished to a desk against the back wall, staring at her sign that read ‘Your neatness is noticed’ while my desk remained a disaster. Rest in peace, Miss Gernhoefer You will be remembered with respect, laughter, and gratitude by many of us who had the privilege (and the nerves!) of being in your class.
