Duane David Cameron

5 August 197627 August 2026

Our deeply loved Duane. Husband, Dad, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, organiser, joker, and the man who somehow always made things happen. He has left a space in our lives that can never be filled.

Duane loved his family fiercely. He was the cherished husband and greatest supporter of Sarah, and the incredibly proud and deeply loved Dad of Hudson, Elora, and Sydney. His family was his world, and there was nothing he wouldn’t have done for the people he loved.

Precious and treasured son of Jill and Jack (Dec). Devoted brother to Skye Balaban, best brother-in-law to Baran, and very proud uncle to Esra. Loved son-in-law of Karen and Kim Phelps. Loved nephew of Gail and Athol Parlane (Dec) and family, and Garry and Isobel Evans and family.

Duane was larger than life. He was the organiser, the connector, the one who brought people together and somehow made everything happen. He was ridiculously quick-witted, endlessly cheeky, fiercely loyal, and usually responsible for the laughter in the room, or some elaborate joke that somebody else wouldn’t discover until much later.

He gave so much of himself to his family, his friends, his sport, his community, and the many people and organisations lucky enough to have him in their corner.

To know Duane was to have a story about him.

And right now, those stories mean more to us than we can possibly say.

Sarah and the family would love to collect as many of them as possible. The funny ones, the ridiculous ones, the moments of kindness, the things he did quietly, and the memories we may never have heard.

Please share yours by clicking Add Your Tribute below. You can also add a photo, and if you would prefer your words to be just for Sarah and the family, your tribute can be made private rather than publicly visible.

A service to celebrate the extraordinary life of Duane Cameron will be held at Eagars Te Henui Chapel, 46 Watson Street, New Plymouth, on Friday 4 September 2026 at 10.30am, followed by a private family cremation.

For those unable to attend, Duane’s funeral will be livestreamed through his Eagars Funerals tribute page, DUANE CAMERON

Messages to Duane’s family may also be left here on his tribute page.

We know how deeply Duane was loved, and we already know one chapel could never contain the impact he made in his 50 years.

So please come as you are. Bring your stories, bring your laughter, bring your tears, and help us celebrate a man who brought so much life to ours.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to move from the heart while fear is present. *Encourage* carries the same root. To en-courage is to put heart into someone, to give them some of your own. That, to me, was one of Duane’s great gifts. I met Duane in 2018, at the beginning of my design consultancy years and one of the most vulnerable transitions of my life. I had two young children, was rebuilding my life and stepping into an entirely new career. From the outside I probably looked determined; inside I was painfully uncertain but fiercely hopeful. In my second week, Duane walked through the door. I remember feeling as though he could see straight through me. He saw the uncertainty, but I think he saw the ambition and potential too. Instead of making me feel inexperienced, he began telling me what was possible. There was something both brotherly and fatherly about his encouragement. No ceiling. No scarcity. Just, “You can do this. I’m here to help.” And he was. We collaborated, hosted events, shared networks, coffees, deep conversations, laughter and plenty of terrible dad jokes. Duane was anchored enough in himself that somebody else’s success never diminished his own. He made people feel more possible in his presence. Our friendship continued through every chapter that followed. He checked in, stayed in touch and kept inviting. His final messages asked about Fiji, my pickleball game and when we were finally going to catch up. Normal exchanges between friends carrying that unconscious assumption: there will be more time. Suddenly, there wasn’t. I wish I had answered those final invitations differently. Duane reminded me to encourage generously, play more, show up, and tell people what they mean to me while they are still here to hear it. Rest in love, my friend. You were a colleague who became a friend who felt much more like a brother. You put heart into me when I needed it. That mattered more than I ever got the chance to tell you. 🧡

Ah woohoo. Goose my friend, I'll miss knowing you might drive past me out walking the dogs, I'll miss bumping into you on the walkway. I'll miss knowing there won't be another battle on the squash Court. It does look like my undefeated record against you in now safe... Rest easy, game set and match. See you in the bar.

Where do I start…. Duane came into my life when I was 8yrs old and from that moment I loved him as if he were my own, when Jill would bring him up north I would steal him and not let him go😊 I absolutely loved him. When he was around 1-2 yrs old my other cousins and I took Duane for a walk in his pram, we ended up fighting over who would push him and in that fight we let go of the pram and down the hill he went 😳 straight into a brick wall…..maybe that explains a lot he was never your conventional kiwi block and was always off center😂🤣 The relationship we had was one of banter (sarcastic) teasing (sarcastic) love (definitely sarcastic) and respect. Of course he always looked up to me as his big cousin(hahahaha yeah right) I will miss my cousin, I will miss my friend, I will miss my partner in sarcastic crime😜 Love you Duane And for Sarah, Huddy, Elora, and Sydney I’m always here for you x💚x💜x🩷

Dearest Sarah and the kids, Duane was just an amazing human. We met him through ANZ and soon become a mate and looked forward to catching up or bumping into him out and about. We will treasure our time knowing him. Seeing you both so happy just a few weeks ago is my last memory of him and just saying how wonderful life was with the you and kids and enjoying his time in his new job. He will be missed! Todays service was amazing and everyone spoke so well. All our love x

Sarah, sending love to you and the family. Your a pillar of strength, compassion and it was shining today. Words can't make it any easier but our door and hearts are always open for you anytime you need.

I originally knew Duane as the Ben Aflick looking dude that married Sarah (who I knew). However I got to know him pretty well over the last year with our shared interest in pickleball. Duane was super passionaite about his new sport and would often send me updates of his games, his opponents and his upcoming tournaments. When we caught up in person he was always super friendly, enthusiastic and seemed to light up the room. Super shocked about your news bro. Love, thoughts and prayers to Sarah and the kids at this tough time.

To Hudson, Elora, and Sydney, There’s nothing fair, reasonable, or just about what’s happened…There’s no comforting words that I can wrap around this to soften this blow or make it OK for you. I can but hope to share the burden that you now carry. I figured out the other day that your Dad and I go back some 36 years. We first met at NPBHS, 1990 when I coached his basketball team. Please accept my apologies…he was a lousy basketball player and I was a terrible coach. A few years later, our path crossed again at TSB Bank. TSB Bank was the common landing ground for many of us young high school grads, who didn’t go on to University and were just too damn pretty to be working in the trades. It was at TSB that your Dad made 2 things abundantly clear to me; 1) my nickname was “Flash” 2) we were going to be great mates and there wasn’t a DAMN thing I could do about it. That was your Dad, an infectious personality that brought humour, lightness and made people feel better about life and themselves. Your Dad was one of the “Good Guys” When you sat at a table with Camo, the format was always consistent….laser focused, unedited, unfiltered, lightening fast wit, and good banter. You could put money on the fact that everyone at that table was fair game. We’d spend hours laughing mercilessly at each other, laughing at Camo, and of course laughing loudest at ourselves. The magnetic extrovert, larger than life, quick witted, social butterfly…that was Camo…that was the part that he let everyone see and enjoy. I think it’s important at this point not to overlook the other part of his Character, the part that’s the essence of your Dad. He was intensely private and held his cards very close to his chest when it came to the thing that meant the absolute most to him…Family. Your Dad’s heart and soul is grounded in Family. You were his ‘True North’, you anchored him. He loved each of you and all of you more than life itself. Much Love to you all, from my family to yours…❤️❤️

It is hard to find anymore words to express how much Duane will be miss at our pickleball practices, with his cheerful and positive presence he always had time for a chat and a greeting with a smile living a trace of shine in every match play. My sincere condolences and love to his family in this very difficult times. Vuela alto amigo.

My heart goes out to you, Sarah and family. Duane was such a kind and generous soul, always ready to help out his community and kids at Omata home and school events. He was so much fun to flip sausages with or help run disco nights, always keeping it chill and making me laugh as I otherwise ran around like a headless chook. He adored his kids and family and you guys were just radiant to see together, Sarah. I am holding you all in my heart, may the love you shared together and the love from your friends, family and community wrap around you and support you through this time.

I first met Duane more than 25 years ago in Wellington when he came looking to rent a room in my apartment. I’m sure it will come as no surprise that his easy charm and good-natured banter quickly won everyone over. Another thing in his favour was that he spelled his name exactly the same way as mine. It felt like fate had done its thing. He moved in, and a great friendship began. The apartment sat above an office block just off Lambton Quay, within minutes of the Arizona and Dockside bars, the National Bank - where DC worked, 24 hour takeaways and Wellington Stadium. In other words, DC was living the dream, never being more than a short walk (or stumble), from the main places that were nearest and dearest to him at the time. Our apartment soon became a social hub. DC had a remarkable gift for bringing people together. He could walk into any room, fit in anywhere, and before long have complete strangers laughing and carrying on like old mates. Wherever DC was, the good vibes followed. We eventually moved on from the apartment, but the adventures kept coming. Over the years we shared countless memories, from lads' trips to the Gold Coast and Brisbane, to karaoke in the Cook Islands where he enthusiastically belted out a few Backstreet Boys' classics. And then there was the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens along with his dad Jack, who somehow managed to out-party all of us. I subsequently moved to various other countries. But no matter where in the world life took us, DC always stayed connected. Distance never got in the way of the friendship. Last year, after nearly a decade, we finally caught up again in person. When I told him I was coming to New Plymouth, his response was classic DC: "That's us bro, any time, any place, I'll be there." It was the best. We laughed about the old days, caught up on everything that had happened in the years between, and shared our hopes for the future. My cup was truly full. At the end of the night, he gave me a big DC bear hug and we promised we wouldn't leave it so long until the next catch up. I had no way of knowing that would be the last time we would see each other. Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful we had that chance to reconnect and share one more special moment together. To Sarah, Hudson, Elora and Sydney, I offer my deepest, heartfelt condolences. Although I’ve never had the privilege of meeting you, please know that whenever DC spoke about you his face lit up with pride and happiness. It was clear that you were the centre of his world. As for me, I will always be grateful that a spare room in a Wellington apartment brought DC bounding into my life all those years ago with his big smirk, knowing wink and enormous heart. He was a great mate, a loyal and generous friend, and someone who made life more fun simply by being part of it. I'll miss the laughs, the stories, the good times. But most of all, I'll miss my friend. On behalf of myself, my wife Kiri, and all my whanau and friends here in Perth and around the world whose lives he touched: go well my brother. You will never be forgotten ❤️

I found Duane's business card sitting in my handbag yesterday and it still seems so unreal. To say I have huge respect for Duane is an understatement, he was the very meaning of "salt of the earth" Honest, humble, reliable - although meeting for coffee recently took a few attempts on both our parts! Family was the absolute highlight of every conversation, I could have listened for hours about the travel stories, what the kids and Sarah are up to, the new house, our shared common interests. How so very proud he is of you all. Much love to Sarah and all the family during this sad and difficult time.

DC, It's been an absolute pleasure working with you and becoming great mates over the years. The endless banter was priceless. Every time Canterbury or the Crusaders lost, I knew I'd be hearing from you. You had a real presence when you walked into a room and you're one of those rare people that everybody liked. You made people laugh, brought plenty of energy, and built genuine friendships wherever you went. I was so happy to see how much you loved your role at BNZ. You threw yourself into it with so much passion and enthusiasm, and it showed. I feel really lucky that we got to spend some quality time together in New Plymouth a few weeks ago. Honestly, it felt like I was being hosted by the Mayor because there wasn't anyone in the Naki who didn't know DC. Sitting down for a beer and listening to you talk about Sarah, Hudson, Elora and Sydney told me everything I needed to know about the sort of man you are. The love and pride you had for your family was obvious, and it was clear they were your world. I'm going to miss you, mate. The laughs, the chats, the banter, and your friendship. It's been a privilege to know you and call you a friend. Rest easy, DC. Tom

Absolutely heartbreaking to have lost such a wonderful Pickleball Friend and a character like no other. I am glad Gareth and I got to experience our first Pickleball tournament together with you. Whether you were on or off the court you always there encouraging, supporting, cracking jokes and being cheeky. I admire your big heart and how family orientated you were! I'll remember Duane's warm and generous spirit. He helped a lot with Ōmata Home and School, always bringing positive energy to the mahi. He was a true gem in our community and will be deeply missed.

Duane was well known & respected in banking & finance circles, where we first became friends when he came to work for Westpac 12-15 years ago. He was a skilled networker & home lender & was well liked amongst his colleagues & clients all of his career. He helped me in the early days of starting my business by making introductions & providing well timed advice, some of those introductions remain my best referrers and help put food on my table to this day & I will always be grateful to him for that. My friend Duane, or DC as he was affectionately known, was a giant amongst men, not just in height & stature but also in the way he gave time to people - he was that rare unicorn of a friend who never had an ulterior motive and wanted nothing from you but your time - to catch up, have a laugh & a coffee or a drink. We often discussed our growing families and he had expressed to me many times over the years what a very proud husband & father he was to his wife Sarah, whom he often spoke of fondly, & to his 3 young children Hudson, Elora & Sydney - all of whom have our deepest sympathies and condolences at this very sad time. Duane was a lover of a great prank & a laugh & I would be remiss in my duties to our friendship by not mentioning that had DC not been the successful banker he was, he could have had a convincing career on Broadway or the Westend due to his beautiful singing voice - that I never had the pleasure of actually hearing, but I have it on good authority that there is still a video of Duane in circulation playing a fabulous Danny Zucko at the Highlands Intermediate school production of Grease Lightening. Last laugh is on me my friend - rest well.

Natasha Carr

Duane, my pickleball mate and dear friend. I still can’t believe you have gone. We had plans of playing together again and after checking our schedules you asked me to play Club Champs with you. Of course, we both thought this was our chance. You always stayed in touch when I left New Plymouth and checked up on me as a true friend does. I’ll miss your smile, energy, banter and incessant chat. Pickleball tournaments won’t be the same but your spirit will linger amongst us. Rest in peace Duane. ❤️ My deepest condolences to Sarah and the children.

Lorraine Jones (LJ)

Firstly, my condolences to all of Duane’s loved ones. Unfortunately, I only knew Duane over the last couple of years, we shared the pleasure of hitting a little plastic ball around a court with great enthusiasm, but that was long enough to know that he was a good bugger. Being on the same court as Duane was always enjoyable, as a playing partner you would always be given lots of encouragement and shot advice, but being Duane’s opponent was even more fun, not only would you be receiving an arsenal of shots you would also be served up a good amount of healthy banter that was always followed with a cheeky smile and a big “tongue-in-cheek” wink of the eye. I remember Duane often resisting the temptation of just one more game at club nights saying “I want to go home and spend some time with the kids”. Duane was truly one of our club’s greatest personalities, losing Duane has hit our club like one of his power drives, he will be missed by us all.

I first met Duane approximately 30 years ago. We connected over going for a run from Gail and Athol's farm to Waimamaku beach. A great way to get to know someone!! To say the news was a shock is a real understatement. Moe mai ra

Jill, Sarah and family, I saw Duane only a few weeks ago in Bunnings. He came up and gave me a big hug, with that big gorgeous smile and had his lovely boy at his side. Conversation ensued and then I said, say hi to your mum before he disappeared.Im so pleased he crossed my path that day, because sadly, I won't have that privilege again. My heart aches for you all. Jill, I am so deeply saddened for you. You are all in my thoughts. Debbie Stevens

Absolutely shocked to hear this news. Duane used to sit opposite me in our little corner of the ANZ bank (corner Gill and Currie Streets). I remember sharing many a good chat with him and many jokes. He was a geniune good guy. He was always having Terry on about something. Hudson was only little then but he would come in and knew where to come in and look for treats at Joy's desk or mine. Such a lovely family. Duane will be deeply missed. Thinking of you, Sarah and family at this very very sad time.

Lynne White

We are absolutely devastated to hear this news. When we were looking for a mobile mortgage manager in the early 2000's, we went onto the National Bank website and looked at all the photos. Duane stood out immediately - Bex just said, "He looks like a good guy.". She was 100% right ... and more. Duane sorted our mortgage requirements then and for several years afterwards, always with a smile, always with a, "No problem", always with total professionalism and always well ahead of deadline. He became our friend as much as our mortgage manager and we stayed in touch after he moved into different roles. Our hearts are broken for Sarah, Hudson, Elora, and Sydney; we simply can't imagine what you're going through and send our love and best wishes at this dreadful time. Fly high DC, gone too soon. You squeezed everything from your time on this earth and enriched the lives of those around you. Rest well now mate.

Jason and Bex Pine

I had the pleasure of meeting Duane a few years ago, his personality was magnetic and infectious. You immediately felt that you had known him for years. My sincere condolences and sympathy lie with the family. We have lost a champion bloke, and he will be sorely missed.

My first meeting with Duane was when I was hosting a group of people from his work wanting to try out Pickleball. He immediately came across as a kind and friendly person with a great sense of humor which made my job alot easier. Having since played with and against Duane you knew it would always be a fun and challenging experience. Fred Burwell.

Fred Burwell

To my incredible pickleball friend. You had a special talent for bringing us all together on and off the court and making everyone feel like a champion. The courts won't be the same without you.

Tania Fleming

Although we only met Duane once, at the wedding of Skye and Baran and never had the chance to see him again, over the years we heard so many times about what a kind soul and genuinely good-hearted and loving, caring and wonderful person he was ,a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished brother and son, and a true friend to those around him. Some people leave a lasting impression not because of how many times you meet them, but because of the goodness you hear and feel in the stories others share about them. Duane was clearly one of those people. Our deepest condolences to his dear wife Sarah, his beloved children Hudson , Elora, Sydney, his mother Jill, his sister Skye, his niece Esra, his dear friend Baran, Sarah's parents and siblings and all those who loved him and whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, and may his memory always remain a blessing to those who knew and loved him.

I offer my deepest condolences and strength to dear Duane Cameron’s wife, his precious children, his sibling Sky, and his entire family. Though our time together in this life was brief, it meant a great deal to me. He was a pillar of a man. We explored Istanbul together and had so much fun; he was exceptionally funny. I will never forget doing the Haka dance with him during the final moments of Baran and Sky’s wedding. He was such a vibrant, incredibly positive soul. May he rest in peace. Until we meet in another life. Dağhan Balaban
