28 April 1954 – 4 July 2026
EAGAR, Michael Peter (Mike)
Passed away peacefully on 4 July 2026, aged 72 years.
Much loved and devoted husband of Kathy. Cherished father and father-in-law of Amy and Dan, Jo and Bob, and Matt and Katie. Proud Poppa to Mila, Tom, Ada; Remi, Freddy; Ollie, and Zhana who brought him immense joy and pride.
Mike was a well-known Taranaki businessman who dedicated much of his working life to R.J. Eagar, helping continue a family business that has served generations of local families. He was passionate about people, community, and providing quality service, taking great pride in the relationships he built over many years.
Outside of work, Mike embraced life with enthusiasm. A keen cyclist, diver, and fisherman, he loved the outdoors, keeping fit and the Taranaki coastline. Whether on his bike, out on the water, or spending time with family and friends, he was happiest when active, exploring new places, and making the most of every day.
Mike will be remembered for his determination, generosity, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. A respected businessman, loyal friend, loving husband, father, and Poppa, his presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
“Your daily ritual Mike was to check that "back page", now it's your turn.”
In preference to flowers donations please consider a donation to Taranaki Hospice.

To Kathy and the Eager Family, Our thoughts are with you on Mike’s passing. He will be missed by so many. Mike was always wonderful whenever we met him at the shop or he was measuring up for carpets and window coverings at our house. A mighty totara has fallen.
Dear Kathy and whanau, there are never any words that can express such sorrow. I met Mike through working at Bartercard and he soon became my mentor, unwittingly 🫶🏾 and friend. One story I have, it was Christmas Eve we had whanau from overseas and moved into room sleeping on a sofa bed. Well one morning my husband and I could barely walk. I rushed into Mike in his store. He looked at me with that cheeky grin of his and said, “Marlaina it’s Christmas Eve are you asking for a bed be arranged to be dropped to your house today and take away the sofa bed?” I just nodded in hope. You guessed it, yep it got done and he did it himself. Mike was a man of immense integrity, inspiration and so much love for our community. When ever I strolled into Mikes office he’d look up and before I spoke would start laughing and say, what escapades are you getting me involved in this time. We had so much fun, so much laughter and so much business. He had so much heart for small businesses owners such as myself. I have so many stories I could actually write a short novella. Mike you may have left our world, you will never ever, ever be forgotten and your stories will keep you alive in our hearts until we join you.in heaven🙏🏿🫶🏾

I have been very lucky to have called this wonderful man “Boss” for almost thirty years, Michael you were a person who genuinely cared about the people you employed, you always enquired about the health and wellbeing of your staff and our families, and provided gift baskets and goodies to us when we were going through tough times. They say a business is only as successful as the people it employs which is partly true, but I think we have been very fortunate to find a business owner who cared about us as much as you did. The next generation have a lot to live up to but I am sure they will be up to the task! Thank you Michael for everything you have done for us – Christmas functions will never be the same ! We will miss you.
