Payno, from one BGW brother to another. You were a unique individual, but you were one of us. You brought your whole self to the tour, and laughed along with us and at us. Plus Fours and absent mindedness. You’ll long be remembered for your calls on etiquette and the Dawn Breakers rules. This was your year! Gone but never forgotten. Rest in peace kind sir. You will be missed but your memory will live on and long.
I first met Brian nearly twenty years ago when we were both re-training as private career advisers. With a shared passion for the education of young people and a mutual love of golf we bonded quickly and developed a strong and lasting friendship, one I valued highly and saddened that it has now ended. Brian was an outstanding athlete, mountain biker and in his later years a fiercely competitive and good golfer. His sense of fairness and stickler for the rules was legendary and we enjoyed so many games together from north of Auckland to the top of the South Island as well as a few golfing weeks in Queensland. Brian introduced me to the BGW (Boys' Golf Weekend) group and I valued the opportunity to, twice yearly, play more golf with him and meet a whole group of new friends. He was a man of impeccable integrity and his service to education, athletics, biking and golf were indicative of a man of character who revelled in giving back to the communities that he got involved with. I will miss his friendship, his sense of humour and the many happy times we spent together on the golf links of our beautiful country. Rest in peace my friend, we will miss you.
