10 September 1933 – 14 March 2026
It’s with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Sylvia Witt who slipped away peacefully on Saturday 14th March at the age of 92.Sylvia was the beloved wife of David, mother to Gour (Sth Africa), Ross (Sydney) and Dickon (Aotearoa NZ), with 10 global grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. In 2001, Sylvia and David moved from Zimbabwe to Aotearoa NZ, where they lived in Wellington and eventually settled in Taranaki in 2022. Sylvia was a scientist, a conservationist, a teacher, a painter, just an extraordinary person. She couldn’t sing and she wasn’t much of a cook - thank goodness for David. She was beautifully eccentric with a wonderful outlook on life. We will miss her very much. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Annie Brydons for their beautiful care of our dear Sylvia. A funeral service to commemorate and celebrate Sylvia will be held at Hardings Chapel on Friday 20th March 2026, 1.30pm, followed by a private cremation.

I met Sylvia when I was a trainee teacher and she was a lecturer at the University of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe.) The year was 1975. Sylvia was a vibrant, original, wise, warm, light-hearted person who was interested in everyone and everything. Sylvia inspired me to be a more interesting and enthusiastic teacher than I would have been otherwise. Later, I named my daughter Sylvia in her honour. Sylvia Witt was, of course, her Godmother. Through the years she gave me several wonderful works of art she had created. I treasure them to this day. She was always a source of encouragement and motivation in my life and she took a keen interest in my children. She will always be remembered as an outstanding human being with a huge heart and a zest for life to match. She adored her three sons and her soul-mate and husband, David. Sending love to all her family. Thank you for sharing her with us. RIP Sylvia.
You was such a super person we loved so much. Stina and Christer
