My wife, Truus, and I met David and Isabel fifteen years ago when, coincidentally with Isabel, we started the famous 'Coast to Coast' walk in England. Since then, we've visited them in New Zealand, kept in regular contact and exchanged travellers' tales and family stories. I always found David a very congenial and interesting person and, as our friendship grew, I also learnt a lot from him. Some time ago, he sent me his biography, which inspired me to write my own. The last time we heard from him was in March this year when we exchanged news of our respective families coping with the virus. Truus and I send our sincere condolences to all his family and friends.
Farewell Uncle David, what a beautiful tribute, much love to the family
To the Walter whanau, our condolences for the loss of David. Our childhood memories sparkle with times with David and Dad, and the warmth of the whole family shown to us. Thinking of you all, lots of love, Kirriley, Nicky-Ann, Samantha and Felicity Astwood.
To Isabel and family. We were very sad to hear of David's passing. Our thoughts are with you all. Linda and Terry Patterson.
To Isabel and family, my deepest sympathy in your loss. I do not get the daily newspaper, so was very shocked to hear of David's death after the funeral was over. I would certainly have been there if I had known in time.
It was wonderful to share in the celebration of David's life through the live link. That was a moving tribute to your Dad Nic, and the boys did their grandfather proud. With tears and laughter, Brian
Dear Isabel and family, thank you for the invitation to be with you today, sorry I was unable to attend. David and Peter were great friends and colleagues for many years and I treasure the wonderful memories of many happy times we all spent together. Being able to attend the service via live stream made us feel very much a part of a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man. You can all feel very proud and cherish your lovely memories. Jill O'Neill and family

Dear Isabel, Nicki, Pip, Rod and Families, I was so sorry to hear of David's passing and send my love and sincerest condolences to you from Australia. I will be forever thankful you and David encouraged Nicki to "cross the ditch" for her AFS journey and our families met. I am also thankful technology today has allowed us to be a part of David's final tribute and I have cried (and laughed) along with you all this morning. It certainly seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree with his children and grandchildren sharing his sense of humour, love of music, family and community. Love to you all and may he rest in peace.
To Isabel and family I extend my sympathy and sorrow to you all on the loss of David. I always knew him as Justine's older brother and enjoyed times when we did meet. I am particularly grateful to him for the assistance and information he gave me regarding the history of my Grandfather's years in Whangamomona, especially the repair of the memorial gates in the Domain. Shirley Mace (Strombom)
I should like to extend my condolences to Isabel and family at this time of your sad loss. I knew David as a good and decesnt person when we were at High School and Isabel, I have known you practically all my life apart from about sixty years when I lived elsewhere. I hope you know the comfort and peace that comes from supportive friends and family and the precious memories of your times together will fill your days with the joy of remembrance...
Isabel and family, John and I wish to extend our very deepest sympathy to you Isabel and family. He will be deeply missed by all, his time in Stratford as mayor and councillor was so appreciated as he had such knowledge in all fields. I remember his piano playing too, a superb pianist. Thinking of you all at this sad time. Megan and John Muter

David shared many entertaining stories on the journey. I shall be forever grateful to David and Isobel for their kindness and sense of fun. My thoughts are with Isobel and family at this time. Dear Isobel and family I was so sad to read of David's passing. Historian, leader, mentor, farmer who loved his family and friends. David taught me so much when he chaired TSB Community Trust. He was my mentor through this time and I greatly appreciated his wisdom and support along with his friendship and wicked sense of humour. I feel privileged to have known and worked with you David. Phil and I send our love and condolences to you Isobel, Pip, Nicola, Rod and families. Jen Blyde and Phil Dickey
Both Janet and I reflect quite often on meetings and "official" dinners with both David and Isobel. David and Janet Lean

Dear Isabel & family, Many happy memories of times shared over many many years. David will be sadly missed. My condolences and much love from Wendy
Isobel and family, We will miss David. He was a great mentor to me at the TRC and we frequently enjoyed his company chatting at the Toko pub on Eastern Taranaki's colourful people and its history, of which he knew so much. He was instrumental in getting Eastern Taranaki 'on the map', sadly he will never get to drive along the fully sealed Forgotten World highway, for which he campaigned with a passion. He will be missed terribly by us and all that knew him. condolences to the family Tim & Kate Payne
I was saddened to read of Davids passing in The Daily News today. What a remarkable man! I admired so much of what David stood for,and where he was from. David would have been a similar age to my mother, Edna Mason, who attended Douglas school. My father Jim was on the council with David for a term or two? On behalf of the wider Coulton family I salute you David. A true gentleman and icon of Taranaki but more particularly an enormously proud member of the Eastern Taranaki region. Rest in Peace. Kerry & Lyn Coulton
Saddened to hear today of the passing of David. He will be remembered fondly for his contribution as a Director of TSB Bank Limited and Trustee of the TSB Community Trust including his leadership role as Chair of the Trust. His TSB legacy will live on through his authorship of his well written book on the Bank's history "From Faith to Fortune". Our condolences to the Walter family during this time of mourning. Harvey Dunlop Chair TSB Community Trust TSB Group Limited
David lived an active life and gave much to friends and community. I grew up with David in Douglas and admired him for his personality and talents and his confidence to use them. He had a quick mind, loved to debate and played any sport well. He played the piano 'by ear' which contributed to many entertaining evenings along with his ability to tell stories, many of which have been published. Condolences to Isabel and family from our family who recall many years of schooldays and village life in Douglas.
Thank you Isobel and family for your generosity in giving David the space and support he needed to make his unparallelled contribution towrds the recognition and well-being of our region throughout his life. A committed and astute community man, a fine and funny raconteur, a great leader and mentor; a privilege to have known and worked with. I share your sadness at this moment, and know that while that sadness shall eventually fade; there is a great legacy of amazing memories and colourful tales strengthening all of you as you face the future.
Sincere condolences to Isabel and family. Jocelyn and I greatly respected David. It was a pleasure and an honour to have known him for over 50 years and to have been working with him recently. Thanks David for all your help over many years. George Gallop.
Dear Isabel and family, our sincerest condolences. David was a top man to live next door to. What guy to share a joke with over the fence. We will miss David, helping out as friends and good people do. Mitch and Russy Graham.

Our family is sad to hear of the passing of David. Dad (Ross Allen) held David in very high regard and Mum still recalls all the laughs and good times you shared together with the Regional Council. A true stalwart in our community of whom you can all be proud. Mum said David always had the best yarns to share. Thinking of you Isabel and your family. Kindest regards from Evelyn Allen
A great man and leader now at rest. David was respected by all he dealt with and as an example was the reason why Stratford District survived the local government reforms. Kind wishes to the family during this celebration of David's life and many successes.
