Dear Kay, I was hoping to see you again at the end of this year, but this isn’t a possibility anymore. Perhaps you’ll have a cigarette (“a rolly”) with my dad when you see him next? He will enjoy that for sure! One of my youngest memories of you is that labels and terms like Aunt was not quite your thing; I agree that it ages us and defines us far too quickly and readily. I feel you can be comforted in the knowledge that you left behind a resilient and strong family who will continue to flourish. II have to wonder, isn’t that what life is really about? And that is, ensuring a little piece of yourself lives on? And/or maybe, somehow, affecting and changing people lives for the better even in the slightest way? I’d say you did of all of these things extremely well even if you knew that or not. You would agree that death is a funny animal. It works in strange and predictable ways. It demands of us its attention and patience, punctuating itself throughout our lives until its our turn. It has, and will become, your companion when you are not looking for it or expecting it, but reminds us all it wins in the end. This has certainly been true in my experience. As a way of getting through times like this, I prefer to alter the narrative by saying people like you, my dad and niece, decided to leave the story, much like exiting the stage versus leaving the show, as a means to teach us all something about ourselves and hopefully make us better people. I also like to think that death only really wins until we are forgotten. So, it will take a very long time for anyone to ever forget you! Where ever you are now, and what ever you need to do next, then god speed. I know the next time I will see you will be in my dreams. S.
