John Charles Cowpland,
A devoted partner to Roxanne,
A much loved Dad to Paul
A cherished poppa, brother and a friend of many.
John’s community spirit and his passion for the emergency services never wavered.
A smart, thoughtful, loving, remarkable and resilient man, who could be direct and honest with his thoughts, but who had a massive heart with the best intent.
John could fix anything, and would do anything for anybody. He rarely sat still, was hard working, courageous, and rarely said no.
He will be sorely missed, but his companionship, wisdom, humour, and love will never be forgotten.
Due to alert levels, a private service was held for John with limited numbers able to physically attend, however the service celebrating the life of John was live streamed from this page.
When alert levels allow for larger gatherings there will be a Memorial Service held for John, please refer here for future updates.
Tributes are welcome to be left below.
Dear John, you were my friend, my partner, my special handsome and clever man, I miss you so much already and in so many ways. It was a blessing that you died suddenly and quickly like Rossco. Say hi to your circle of friends, Stan, your parents and Emma and I will remember always your special says, your handkerchiefs, your bug beatle tourist glasses and your solid, loyal and kind way. Xxx
Rest in Peace Johnny boy, was never a dull day with you around!!! Say hi to the rest of the Wellsford team up there for me!!!
We are so sad for you and the family Roxanne. John was such a lovely man. We will be thinking about you and John today . R.I.P. John Lots of love John and Elizabeth xxxxxx
RIP John, miss those chats with you and Reg at Wellsford Station, always gave you a call before driving through, most of the time you were out the back with a cold one, and the coke you always shouted.
We are so sorry for your loss Roxanne and whanau. Such a sad time for you all. Lots of love and hugs from us and the kids xxx
I am deeply shocked to hear that John has passed. He was one of the first friends I made when I came here 14 years ago. He was just the most gentle soul. Condolences to his family and particularly Roxanne. So terribly sad after such a hard year and now particularly. RIP John, the sun will always be on your back. You were one really caring guy and will certainly be missed by a whole raft of people. X
Rest In Peace John a true gentleman that contributed to this town selflessly. Much love to his family.
John was a lovely man, with a beautiful smile and a friendly word for everyone. He was a good friend and also a talented handyman having completed different jobs for us over the years. It was such a shock to hear the sad news and know that we will not be able to have our little chats up the street or hear his special laughter again. John will definitely be missed by our family. Sending our love from the Reid family.
A long time friend , sorry for your loss Paul and Anne and family love Herb and Roz x
