First met Brent on the training field at the Old Pens, probably not long after he arrived in Penarth. His Maori side step was painful! What a character. Absolutely unique in every way. Played rugby with Mugsy in the seconds when he was a top back rower. Fearless and energetic. He then matured into the front row for the first team. The Old Pens 1st team that played against a very Strong Cardiff RFC in the cup in 1995. I then played with him over at Penarth RFC, and his durability and tenacity was relentless. He always gave 100%! I also worked with Mugsy in his early days following his arrival, where in the depths of Winter he would be on site driving the forklift in his shorts and flip flops in typical Mugsy Style. We toured together to Texas, met him in France where he brought Luke to the Afro in Arras! Such a top, bloke. Going to miss you my friend. God Bless Mugs!

Muggy is a genuine legend in Penarth Wales. As a fellow kiwi and friend of Mugsy who settled here, I am honoured to have wandered across his path in Wales. Whenever local people heard my accent, the first person they would ask me if knew was Mugsy, that crazy Kiwi bloke who wears flip flops and rugby shorts even in the winter! They would then fondly regale me with Barry Crump like yarns of Mugsy for the next 15 minutes. It was just a matter of time before we caught up over a beer at the rugby club. Always smiling and laughing Mugsy was a genuine bloke who would do anything for anyone. He was the epitome of an iconic no frills kiwi abroad and won over so many people here. Wearing gumboots or jandals which he called his Japanese safety boots he would turn up at our place after an early milking session and set to work doing up our house including tiling the kitchen floor, building an ensuite, a pergola attached to the house and landscape the garden before heading back to the cowshed for the afternoon milking. There are many homes here in the Vale of Glamorgan that have benefitted from Mugsy's many handyman skills. A rugby legend in Penarth he had the rare distinction of captaining both Penarth RFC and rivals Old Penarthians. Tough as old boots, he loved the game and got stuck into the nitty gritty of front row graft and the odd bit of skulduggery, dished out with a cheeky grin . A wonderful jolly man he was loved and admired leaving a great impression on the locals and a huge gap in our hearts when he felt the karanga to return to NZ. A unique man , his passing is mourned by the many who knew him in Wales. Loved and missed. Our heart goes out to you Tena, Luke and Tanyka from Penarth Wales. Dave Swain (Dai Kiwi)

Muggy was one of the nicest people I have ever met. I first met him when he arrived in Penarth S. Wales looking for work to supplement his funds whilst travelling the world. I think he had circa £37 to his name . His attire was flip flops , shorts and a rugby shirt. I think he had a back pack- but that was just rugby kit and super glue( his personal favourite first aid supplement) I got it sorted for him to get his head down in our local rugby ( Old Penarthians)clubs changing rooms for a few nights whilst he got his act together. He never left! We played our first game together for the seconds against a local side , St Iltyds. Muggsy was everywhere the ball was! He made his mark that day. It was when rucking was part of our game, and boy did he know how to get rucked. He was forever being hoofed off the ball. It was a regular site to see his shirt and Back ripped apart by opposition studs- even more regular was him smiling and telling them “ I don’t come alive until I’ve had a good kicking” Muggsy was straight into our first team where he played flanker then switched to prop- either side of the scrum! To him it did not matter where , as long as he was playing! Muggsy played for us as long as I can remember. Some say he was tough as teak . I think granite is more apt. Muggsy has a special place in all our hearts. I would love to say he was a breath of fresh air when he arrived at Penarth , however his other loves apart from his family and rugby was his cows! Inevitably he smelt of sh#t whenever he turned up! Always straight from milking. We miss him dearly and always will. He was a gentleman who made friends everywhere he went. A real man’s man and a true warrior.

legend is a word often over used but not in this case. Mugsys name will never be forgotten by both rugby clubs in Penarth - not just for his exploits on the field but because of the wonderful man he was off it. The hardest, softest man I ever met. RIP my friend. Plug

I'm so pleased I came down to see you guys a couple of years ago. Mugsy welcomed me into your home, shared the odd beer with me, and scared the arse off me with his one-handed fast driving. I'm going to the six nations in a couple of weeks, and I will certainly raise a glass or two, to a great guy God bless you Mugsy, you will always be in my thoughts
