3 August 1928 – 29 January 2022
Passed away peacefully on 29th January 2022 at home in Hawera aged 93. Much loved father of Alison Hoyte, (late) Jennifer, Christopher and Jacqueline Causer. Husband of (late) Valerie, father-in-law to Warwick, Brenda and Andre. Grandad to Jane, Alex, Spencer, Sydney, Cyprus and Sophie. Brother to (late) Joyce Ruffell and Alan Causer.

Eric was a wonderful brother to grow up with. Being 14 years older than me he (and our father) had all the tools and the knowledge to use them. He made many boats often to his own designs. I learnt much from him as I helped to build the boats and also his first house. He could make anything out of wood or metal. The last boat he (we)built in Nelson was 18 foot Tinkerbell, powered by a marine conversion ford 10 engine. Every brass bolt and nut and there were many was made on the lathe from round brass rod and hexagon rod. We also made prop shaft bearings, grease pumps, copper petrol tanks and other things from scratch, much money was saved and many hours were spent on the lathe into late evenings. More fun than homework. And we mixed up paint primer from red lead pigment, and linseed oil etc. I think he got more pleasure from building boats than from using them, although we did spend many hours fishing in the channels between Monaco and Rabbit Island, and in Nelson Harbour. As a teenager in he war in England he earned pocket money making metal toys out of metal salvaged from crashed planes using our father's lathe and other tools. There was no shortage of materials as we lived just east of London under the flight path of German planes. I was lucky to have Eric for a brother and I am sure that there are very many people who have valued his company and help over his long life.
A very nice farewell service for Eric. I remember when I was young spending time on holiday at their house in Arapiki Road. I was also Valerie and Erics flower girl. Eric was very talented with his wood working skills and there will be many things he has built that will be treasured I'm sure. Well done Alison and family for his his care in those last few years - it certainly isn't an easy ask and I'm sure he was very appreciative of that care. A good life and now at peace
You are an inspiration and a treasure lost. We will remember you in great fondness. Rest in peace.
Dearest Dad all I can say is thanks for always being there to help and guide me . Always being positive and helping me achieve things that wouldn't have been possible without your encouragement. You will live forever in my heart.
