Doug and Elaine were our next-door-neighbours at Whau Valley Road, from about 2009, moving there on the same day. Arthur and Doug were both lifetime farmers, football addicts, readers, talkers, politicians-without-portfolios, and Lions' Club members - Whangarei Pakeke Lions - that is, 'respected elders'. And they were. We stuck together at Lions, till numbers and age said 'enough' ....then continued to meet for monthly lunches., and bonhomie. Such friendships are priceless. Doug was intelligent, loyal, caring, sparky, genuine, and a pleasure to spend time with. Since Elaine's death, Jennifer and Des have been models of family devotion and love. When Arthur died suddenly on Dec 21, Doug and Jennifer travelled from Warkworth to attend his funeral, although Doug's health was in decline. I was very touched to see him there. Farewell Doug. I will miss you sorely. May the road rise to meet you. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the wind be always at your back,. And until we meet again, may God hold you in hollow of His gentle hands. Go free. From Gwendolyn Needham, with love to all the family.

So sad to read about Doug's passing. Doug was involved with Waimauku outdoor bowls and indoor bowls and that is where I met Doug. He always had a smile and gave great advice. We both moved up north and I visited them often as they weren't way away from my parents but after my parents died I didn't get to see them. Doug will be remembered for his wisdom and friendship that he gave me. RIP Sue Smith
