I 'knew of' Bruce for may years before we met at a Paediatric Society conference more recently. I am sad to hear of his death. The New Zealand Child and Youth Epidemiology Service is privileged to have had the opportunity to work alongside Bruce and Cure Kids in the State of Child Health reports. His passion for children and their well-being was a constant inspiration. He will be greatly missed in the child health community, and of course even more by those he loved closely. Sincere condolences to the family. Thank you for sharing your greatly treasured husband, father, father-in-law and grandpa with us. Mavis Duncanson Director, NZCYES
It is with much sadness that New Zealanders for Health Research (NZHR) acknowledge the passing away of Doctor Bruce Scoggins. It was Bruce’s leadership and behind-the-scenes perseverance over several years which brought about the creation of New Zealanders for Health research in 2015. In 2019 in recognition of his contribution the NZHR Board appointed him to serve as our inaugural patron. Bruce’s legacy will live on in multiple ways including through Cure Kids’ work on behalf of tamariki and NZHR’s advocacy for health research in general. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to Bruce’s family, as well as all those he inspired through his life’s work.
Bruce was a committed researcher and worked for the advancement of Research in the NZ community, we first met when he was CEO of the HRC, and I was wanting funds, so promoting our researchers as being excellent candidates. So I suppose that was one reason Bruce approached myself and others to look at the need for a wider society engagement in Research, we agreed and set of to accomplish that, we got frustrated and blocked by vestured interests, so packedup our tent and retired. But Bruce never lost sight of the need and against my better instincts, he convinced me we had to have another go, and this time we were successful. New Zealanders for Health Research as it is known , had the 'Honour of Bruce accepting the role of Patron, which he did at a fine lunch at Matakana a few years ago. To his family , who Bruce so often talked about go my sympathies and they can take great comfort on his achievements, there will be many good memories. Graham
I have fond memories of working with Bruce at Cure Kids. He’s well known for his accomplishments and dedicated years of service to Health Research specifically on improving the health outcomes of tamariki in New Zealand. What I admired and respected the most was his intellect, gentle nature, friendly smile and of course his incredible sense of humour. Sending my condolences to the Scoggins family. Ia manuia lou malaga Bruce (blessed be your journey). Sarah
Bruce gave a lifetime of service to improve the health of New Zealanders – and in particular the health and wellbeing of children. Bruce volunteered for Cure Kids for 15 years, both as a Board member and as Chair of our Medical & Scientific Advisory Committee. He was always generous with his time and expertise, to make sure that Cure Kids invested in the highest quality research. We all learned so much from him. Bruce had a sharp intellect, a wide network, strong principles, and a keen sense of humour. We have received messages of condolences from his friends and colleagues, including researchers at Universities throughout New Zealand. He will be missed. Sending heartfelt wishes to Suzanne, Amanda, Warwick, and the rest of Bruce’s family, Tara Satyanand, Cure Kids
