Tributes

To the Mills Family Very deepest sympathy on the loss of Dear Barry. I had the privilege of working with him in the FED division in the mid 80s to mid 90s. Barry was a gentleman; a very kind, wise and very understanding man who was respected by all and a man we will never forget. May your memories comfort and sustain you. Barry will be truly missed and my thoughts are with you at this very sad time. Love Noeline Mills xx

It was a pleasure and a revelation when Barry became the technical Manager of engineering for NCR. The ability of the man was very evident from that day until we retired at the same time after my 38 and his 40 years of service. His friendship built over many meetings and projects, which were always interesting and displayed the great degree of thought Barry always had given to any issue. He was the true gentleman always ready to understand that lateral thinking by some engineers was often constructive and enlightening. His implementation of computers into our business was transformational. Our sympathy goes out to all the family, both Mills and NCR, for we both have to share such a good man. Goodbye, with a profound sense of loss Raewyn and Jack Bardsley

To the Mills Family and the NCR Family. It was saddening to hear about Barry's passing. I worked for him from 1975 to 1994 at NCR in Wellington and Auckland. Barry was a kind and generous man, becoming my mentor and close friend. We had wonderful times at work, the ups and the downs, I recall end of year financial results and forecasts that had to be finished or dreamt up! on schedule, with pressure from HO in Dayton. Barry was always understanding and guiding with his "What Ifs" He was also great to be with outside of work, especially at the annual FED Branch Conventions, where he trusted and gave me free reign to organise! Always a good friend to my family and always interested in what was happening in my life. The last time I saw Barry was when I left NCR in 1994, but have always thought of him and remembered the 'Good Old Days' . He will be truly missed, Rest in Peace Bazza. Best Wishes Dave

To the Mills family We heard the sad news about Barry's passing on Saturday and it triggered memories about the many very fine people that Jill and I met while I was with NCR from my early days in Wellington in the early 1970s, various international posts and finally back in Auckland in 1994. Barry was one of the finest of those NCR people, someone who always had time to patiently listen about the frequent challenges that we faced, especially dealing with our largest and most demanding customers and also the frustration about delays in availability of our product or fixes to problems that our customers just could not understand. Barry would sit back, quietly listening, frequently with one of his wry all knowing smiles before ultimately calmly explaining that jumping up and down would not speed things up and that the customer would get over it. Barry's advice to me was never far from the mark and I know he was the first port of call to many other NCR people who benefited from his wisdom. We know Barry will be greatly missed, not just by his own family but also his NCR friends and colleagues. Best wishes Mike and Jill Jones

Dianne and the Mills family, Very sorry to hear the news. I worked at NCR from 1979 to 1995 and had great pleasure in working with Barry. He was one of the truly great guys and was a role model for me in conducting and negotiating business deals. To this day, 27 years after leaving NCR, I still ask myself “what would Barry do?” when in a tricky business situation. So in a way, for me and many others, he will be with us for the rest of our lives. Kind regards, Grant and Melissa Broadbent

Dear Friends at NCR (NZ), I received the sad news of Barry Mills’ death early this morning and wanted to comment on his life at NCR. Most of you already knew Barry and his loyalty to our Company long before I had the opportunity and pleasure of meeting such an outstanding personality. I can only imagine his early years with NCR (NZ) after his days at New Plymouth Boys School. It’s a rare attribute in a large company to operate and work as if it was your very own company. Barry Mills was that kind of guy. He was not only loyal, but always on the lookout was doing things right and always looking for new ideas or ways to do his tasks better. He was not only knowledgeable, confident, capable, and very dependable in working and managing his department, but helping in all aspects of NCR’s business efforts. It was a pleasure to work with Barry for nearly ten years while I was in New Zealand and for the many occasions over these past 30 years we have been living back in America. Even with two major surgeries that I know of, Barry’s spirits were high and he was ready to have hope and joy in working and helping others. Like so many others, I have been blessed by knowing and working with Barry. I pray for peace and comfort for each of you in his family and all that knew Barry well. We miss seeing you and the NCR (NZ) Annual gatherings. May God Bless each everyone of you. Love, Jim and Peg Butts
