I got to know Roy in the mid 1960s when we were both member of the Sea Cadet Unit TS Achilles. I enjoyed his company, infectious sense of humour and his positive disposition. I went off the join the Navy in 1970 and only saw Roy on an occasional basis over subsequent years. I did however attend the launch of his book and a signed copy now resides on my bookcase. It was good to see him again and acknowledge the contribution he has made over the years, in particular to the Sea Cadet Corps and in documenting the history of the the New Zealand Merchant Marine. Fair seas and smooth sailing Roy!

I first met Roy and Jane when invited into their home to help resolve some computer problems that Roy was experiencing in finalising his third book and getting it published. Over the following years I became a frequent and welcomed visitor as something was always going wrong with his PC, wifi or printer! Friendships developed, with frequent visits to the Frog 'n Kiwi cafe around the corner. Yes Roy certainly had a varied and international background, and a super story-teller. His books have immortalised the town of Marlow! I was delighted to be at the launch of his final book by which time his health was sadly deteriorating. Roy was simply a decent bloke who worked hard on his varied jobs and deserved his retirement in lovely Mangawhai. My thoughts and sympathies naturally go to Jane and their family. Although a short stay I also appreciate the wonderful contribution that the rest home provided over recent months. I will certainly miss Roy, and am sure he will not be forgotten.
