It was with utter shock , disbelief and sadness that I read of Bruce's sudden passing. It was only last year as a guest at my 70th, that he was so fit, spritely for 93yrs old and enjoying life supported by his loving family and dear friend Marie. In the early 1070's (1970-1972) as a student at Teachers' College, Bruce was a very popular, talented, caring and well loved music lecturer. As a music student I have many memories of how Bruce made our music life at college fulfilling and supported his students to participate and grab every opportunity eg. music camps, orchestras and teaching music. In a difficult era of my life Bruce showed compassion and support by inviting me to join his family in activities and in so doing I became aware of what a caring, close family he had. Bruce spoke on behalf of my father at my wedding and has followed my teaching career with interest and support. I thank you all for the opportunity to share in celebrating Bruce's life, at his warm and uplifting funeral. The musical contributions epitomised Bruce's talent and passion for his band music and demonstrated the mana Bruce held within the musical world. He was to me a mentor and a person I looked up to. He will be sorely missed. My condolences go out to his family in this sad time in remembering such a full and happy family life. signed Judy Firkins
I was with deep sadness that l read of the passing of Bruce. I first met Bruce in 1961 when he handed me a corner to learn at Huntly College. I later played under his conductor ship for the Waikato first Armed Regiment Brass Band. My fond memories of Bruce have lasted a lifetime. Bruce was the greatest leader of anything l have ever belonged to Signed Paul Sloan
Bruce was one of the music lecturers during my time at Hamilton Teachers College (1961-62). He was always enthusiastic and will always be remembered by male students for his rehearsals of the Hallelujah Chorus. RIP Bruce.
The passing of Bruce last week is a great loss, and I wish to extend to Lesley, whom I have met, and all the rest of his family my sincerest condolences at his loss. He will be sadly missed by his family, and all others who knew him. My main contact with Bruce was through the Snells Beach Community Church, where he was one of our esteemed musical team, with his beloved brass cornet, for so many years. He was a stalwart member of the church, and was always sensible and organised, and excellent to talk to. Then as he got older, and then passed 90 years old, he seemed not to miss a beat, and we all marvelled at his capacity to cover all the essentials despite his wonderful age. I will be in Wellington next week visiting family, and would have loved to attend his service. It will be a significant event. and I shall endeavour to participate in the live stream.
