In 1975, my wife, Jacq, and I arrived at "Sunnybank" to take over the care of foster children on behalf of Catholic Social Services ,Wellington. The Sisters of the Missions had previously run Sunnybank for primary and Intermediate school aged boys when we arrived but we were asked to care for secondary school pupils as well. When I saw June Palmer's obituary notice I felt that I had to add my name/tribute to a wonderful potter and friend I got to know and appreciate in the two years Jacq and I spent at "Garindale" - as the place was renamed! A local Nelson person assured us that June Palmer's coffee mugs were much better than any others....and they definitely were! My first two children who were born in Nelson while we were at Garindale, have no memories of our time there - and photos at that time were of the instamatic variety! May the Lord Bless June and her family for her selfless good cheer and her absolute dedication to her craft!
