Thank you so much for sharing Vicki's beautiful service online today - it meant a lot to those of us far away. Vicki was a profoundly formative influence in my life. I was lucky enough to meet her on the first day of my first real job. The year we spent in a little office at the SC together will I think always be the most important of my professional life, and Vicki was at the heart of it. As so many others have said, she had a unique combination of intellect, cynicism, humour and selflessness. She mocked me mercilessly as a greenie and a hippie, and I loved every second of it. She taught me so much professionally and she made every day brighter and more interesting. Her intellectual curiosity and work ethic were absolutely inspirational. She was so unshakeably herself. And her generosity was really unparalleled. When I was a lonely LLM student in Connecticut and she was living down the coast in NYC, she conspired with my boyfriend in South America - who she'd never met - to set up a surprise visit in her apartment. She was working 15 hour days at the time. Nothing was ever an imposition. I can't count the number of times she dropped everything to host and support me. I'll never forget her. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and Crown Law colleagues.
I was so very sad to hear of Vicki's passing. Vicki was hugely supportive of our team. She will be missed by many. She had a sharp intellect, was pragmatic and deeply committed to her work. It was a privilege to know and work with her. My most sincere condolences to Vicki's family, friends and colleagues. May you find some small comfort in your memories and the tributes to Vicki.
I remember Vicki very fondly from her time working at Cravath in New York. She was a wonderful person - always quick with a smile or a hearty laugh. And also a superb lawyer - intelligent, thoughtful, and perceptive. All of us here in New York and at Cravath were very sad to learn of Vicki's passing, and we all extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Vicki's family, colleagues and friends. She will be deeply missed.
I was so sad to hear of Vicki's passing. We met during her years at Cravath in NYC and will always remember her welcoming smile, quick laugh and the fun times we spent as a Kiwi crew in NYC. Sending love to Vicki's family and friends <3
It is with deep sadness that the Auckland law faculty learned about Vicki's passing. She was one of our own and will be greatly missed both as a dear friend and for her intellectual contribution to the law. Many of us taught Vicki or went to law school with her. She made an impression on everyone she met. I was on the AWLA committee when we awarded her its scholarship way back in 2002/3 when she was an undergraduate - we awarded it not just for her fierce intellect but for her well-roundedness and generosity. Despite being intellectually gifted, she was incredibly down to earth. On returning to NZ from overseas myself, I was pleased to see Vicki had returned and was bringing her intellectual heft to our human rights jurisprudence. It was a delight to be teaching cases where Vicki was counsel because they were always so well-argued. I was looking forward to continuing to follow her career. My heart goes out to her family and friends at this sad time.
I was lucky enough to work with Vicki when she was John McGrath's Clerk at the Supreme Court. in 2006. I came in as his new Associate after several years away from the Courts. Vicki was incredibly efficient with research and eagle eyed with proofing. But what I remember most is how kind she was in showing me the ropes, not to mention quietly turning a blind eye and fixing a few blunders of mine! She always found time to stop in and catch up. Now at the High Court, I always loved seeing Vicki in the counsel benches smiling back at me and her name on submissions. It was a point of pride having known and worked with her when just starting out in her career. I sign this with great sadness at loosing her too soon. Sending love and condolences to Vicki's family, whom I know she loved and valued greatly. Donna Byrne
I met Vicki during the first days of our LLM at Harvard. You could see immediately that she had incredible intellect and was destined to become a superb lawyer. I also discovered her sense of fun, humility (despite her intellect) and the support she showed her friends. Although, for us both, life and work took us home, our time at Harvard left a formational mark. She will be missed and so many of us owe so much to her. With condolences, Claire Solk (nee Balchin)
I had the pleasure of working with Vicki in the Constitutional and Human Rights team at Crown Law. Vicki was a superb role model for myself and the other junior lawyers. She was tough and resilient, but was also so kind, patient and caring. Vicki was impeccable in all aspects of her work, often one of the last staff members to leave the office, and always maintained her sense of humour, even when under immense pressure. Vicki and I bonded over our mutual interests in US politics and she kept me sane throughout the 2020 US Presidential Campaign. I would often look up from my desk to see her holding her phone with mischievous grin, eager to show me the latest rage tweet from Trumpty Dumpty. I almost needed to create a new email folder to keep up with all the US news-related links we sent each other. I will miss Vicki dearly...she left us far too soon. To Vicki's family: I am so so sorry for your loss, but rest assured that Vicki made an indelible mark on the legal profession in her brief time she had with us. With love, Henry.
I met Vicki in the first week of our LLM degree at Harvard and could see straight away that she was a top class lawyer with a piercing intellect. But she wore her learning lightly and was never anything but humble even though she had much to brag about. Never anything but fun and engaging, Vicki was a valued and much loved member of our class. I am deeply saddened that we have lost her so young and with an exciting career still ahead of her, but have no doubt that the contributions she made to her friends and communities will continue to be felt by us for many years. My condolences to Vicki’s family. May she rest in peace. Alistair Fletcher (LLM class of 2008)
I too remember Vicki well as a student of mine at the Law School at Auckland (in 2004, when I looked it up). Very formidable but outgoing and friendly. I did see her from time to time subsequently, and had heard, unsurprisingly, how respected she had become as a lawyer. I am greatly saddened by this news of Vicki's passing.
It is with great sadness that I hear about Vicki's passing. She was a highly respected and valued student at the Auckland University Law School, including in my criminal procedure class. Indeed, I was proud to write Vicki's reference for the prestigious Frank Knox Scholarship to undertake the Harvard Law School Master of Laws degree in 2007 (a rare and singular achievement for an Auckland Law School graduate). She will be missed by her teachers, Law School classmates, colleagues and friends. My deepest condolences to Vicki's family and loved ones.
