It is impossible to talk of my Aunty Maureen without, in the same breath, talking of her deceased husband, Dick (Richard). Uncle Richard had a quick-wicked, deeply Irish sense of humor. Many was the time as we careened down Spanish malformed roads in the 60s that he would search for the ‘Ejection Seat’ button on the dash of his car, and terrify me with the prospect of being made involuntarily airborne at any moment. But Aunty Maureen perfectly matched that with those frequent (and deliciously mischievous) glints in her laughing eyes. I used to often say to her “You are my Favourite Aunty”, to which (in latter years) she would respond “I’m your ONLY Aunty” - technically (at those times) correct - but nevertheless, what I suppose I was really communicating to her was that she was one of my favourite people in the whole wide world. And for good reason. She was a an Irish Queen in her own way - a Queen of kindness, tolerance, wisdom and affection. She and her husband made a wonderful couple. And now they are together once again. I can only imagine the loss that Michael and Richard must be feeling at this time. May she Rest in Peace, and may the glints of the night’s stars oft remind us of the laughing glint in her Irish eyes. Farewell, Maureen. A Queen that verily needed no Crown. You were deeply loved, and will be deeply loved. Forever. In Loving Memory - Fergus and Tri
