Funeral service held at Mt Albert Salvation Army

Tributes

Dearest Sam It saddens me to hear of your passing - I just watched your funeral service online. Sam .. thank you for mentoring and coaching me through one of the most difficult times in my life and reminding me of the love of God. Even after I left the army you would send me encouraging messages on Facebook … I was always so thankful that you took the time and cared enough to offer your wise words. Sam you have now been Promoted to Glory! Now with the God you loved so much. Much love to the family Gaylene Turvey

HI Nana, I miss you alot and wish you were here. One memory I will hold dear to my heart of you was our sunday soccer afternoons. You would come especially to spend time to talk to me about anything and everything. We would share our week together and on the up's and downs. You always encourage me and also gave me advise when I needed it. I will also miss coming to your work and being greeted with your wonderful smiling face, you would always keep my favorite books for me and I will hold those close to me all my life. You never stopped showering me with alot of love, cuddles and endless gifts. The last few months I have spent reading those books sitting by your side as it has been difficult for you to talk, I feel sad you were so sick and hope you felt some relief whenever I came to massage your legs and feet when you were sore. I pray you are in a better, pain free place. I love you and miss you and hope to meet you again one day. Lots of love Azi.

Dearest Dad, It it so difficult not to be able to ring you or just drop by and see your beautiful face and gorgeous smile. I will always love you and miss you. After moving closer to you and hearing you bad news, I was glad I could be there for you even more. Now you have moved so far away, I cant even see you :(. Dad, Thank you for everything you have done and given to me. When we were little and moving to NZ we thought you were bringing us to stay and walk on gold, now you must be doing that in heaven. We all boarded the plane together so long ago in the 80's so you could give us a good education, up brining and life. You did it dad! You would shield us from the world and protect us all our lives. You were the best father a girl could ask for, you put us first and never bought anything for yourself. You taught us to be gentle, humble, kind and forgiving. I will always remember our very early morning wake ups, breakfast, walk, fishing and soccer games. You were my rock dad and had my back no matter what. I feel so lost and lonely without dad, you have left a big empty space in our family which will never be filled. I wish you didn't get sick and that you were still here with us but I know you are safe, pain free and in a much better place and God has his own plans. I look forward to meeting you one day and hugging you once more, seeing your smiling lovely face. God gave us golden day with a golden heart and I hope we have all carry on and being like you dad. I love you to the moon and back. Lots of love your darling daughter Eve.

Hi Nana, This is Rishaab, your 'scholar' grandson (as you called me). I had the privilege of working beside you when we first moved into our new house. You helped me repair the deck, assemble all the new cupboards, helped with shifting furniture and removed screws from dangerous planks of wood to make our deck safer. For the few days that you came here, I remember you walking down the driveway with your big smile. You also never failed to always congratulate through Facebook or face to face whenever I got an award or recognition. You taught me to get along with my brothers and the many other lessons which will stick with me forever. Lastly you taught me the Micah's theme with your words and actions which is to "act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with God" To end I would just like to read your favorite Bible verses which was Psalm 23 verse 4. It states : "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." We see that you applied this verse all throughout his life and faced every hurdle and challenge with a big smile. We saw this especially throughout your battle with cancer where you fought like a warrior and stayed at peace with God till the end. As you said on the 14th of Jan, 6:45am "I think this has been a journey that I won".

Hi Nana, this is Abishai your second oldest grandson. This speech will be my final goodbye to you my wonderful nana. From the time I was very small, I knew you are an ideal example of what a family man should be. Not only were you the leader our family, you were an incredible human being who left a positive impact on everyone you met. Alot a mourning your loss not only family but a wide range of friends, co-workers, church family and neighbors. Nana you have worked at the Salvation Army since I can remember. You were a very proud father of 4 kids and a proud grandfather or 7 grandchildren. You set an example as a loving Christian and this reflected through your faith and actions. You are soft spoken, wise, and was the perfect example of what it means to live by the fruits of the spirit. Nana l know loved us very much. You were a big family person and would often go out of your way to visit us to see how we were doing. You were always the life of our family gatherings and you made sure that we felt welcomed. You always bought things for us like soccer shirts and boots and I’m sure a lot of us have at least one soccer shirt you have given us. Nana you loved the sport and were so passionate about it and your passion was passed through the family as we all developed a love for the sport too. Nana, you must remember you bought me my first pair of soccer boots and I know that you were the reason I’ve come to love the sport so much. Nana you also took me to my first live soccer game in Eden park and I’ll always cherish that memory. Nana you oved singing karaoke and at every family gathering, we would bust out the karaoke machine and everyone would take turns singing their favourite old Indian songs long into the night. Nana were the star of the show and everyone loved hearing his voice. I know that I'm a better person because I was loved by you. I only hope that I can live up to the example of love, strength, character, and integrity that you displayed.

None of us will ever forget his broad smile and his hearty laugh. None of us will forget those moments when his eyes danced with delight over someone’s happiness or great accomplishment. None of us will ever forget seeing his head lifted up in song – he loved to sing. Rest in peace Sam.

Hi Nana, Ezekiel your best buddy here. I miss you soo much and wish I would cuddle you one last time. I miss walking to your house everyday and seeing you smiling face welcoming us in the evenings. I will miss you at all my hockey games which you never missed rain or shine. When I looked out in the crowd, I could see you cheering me on. I will also miss you a soccer every week, to nurture, guide, encourage and cheer us up. Thank you for everything your showered me with and spoilt me so I never went without anything, I will treasure all those things from you as my memory of you. I have you photo up above my bed so I can see you everyday. I will never forget the fun times we had on our cruise together, enjoying all the food and coconuts and so glad we all went together.. I wish we had time to do some more trips but its ok, you're the best nana ever!. Lots of Love from you youngest Grandson Ezekiel.
