Grandad Mack. I met Grandad Mack as a very young child. I remember the meeting fondly. It was probably one of my first ever family roadies. He shared Nanas incomparable baking with us and read stories as we sat on his lap. He felt larger than life, kind, warm, and safe. Then he showed us the cell in his back yard… I am ever grateful he moved to Burns Street once I got older. I last saw Grandad Mack regrettably a few years ago now. I’m sorry Nana Mack. We decided early one day we’d get some fresh fish and he’d help me cook dinner… It started off well, he showed me how the oven worked and where the potato was… then went to “check on his Whiskey”… I noted to bring the Whiskey to the kitchen next time. I loved sitting in the lounge with him, remembering his family, sharing rugby bants, listening to his memories of Policing in the old days, his phenomenal athletic accomplishments, or just sitting in silence – with a Dram of course. Of all the stories he shared during that visit, one stands in my heart the most. A very loving praise of his ‘Aud’ and how it gave him great satisfaction to see her take out the Country Womens baking competitions over and over again when his children were young, acknowledging her masterful culinary talents. I see the way he looked at Nana Mack in the same way my Dad looks at Mum, it’s pretty special. Grandad Mack is the epitome of a Good Man, and I am honoured for having him share his time with me. There is only one Grandad Mack, in his tartan hat. Ma te wa GMack.
Dad your final journey is upon you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being my Dad and teaching me some very important life lessons along the way. It is time to stand down and rest easy , catch up with those family and old mates that have gone before no doubt a dram or two awaits.
