Tributes

My kindy bestie, no words can sum up our friendship. Each of my earliest memories include you from jumping on the tramp, watching muppets on the computer, the excitement of going on Johnny’s bus, many dance parties and the phone calls. You were a brother to my sisters and a son to my parents, wherever I went you were with me. When I first asked if you were okay when in hospital March 2022 you replied “just a brain tumour, nothing major yano” I think I was more in shock than you. Reading back our messages of the past year you were always so content with everything just going with the flow. Explaining how the treatment was “pretty cool honestly” and the ability of looking at positives in even a worse case scenario encouraged me to see it the same. We laughed how this was all just going to be a crazy story to tell your kids one day and we could look back and laugh about things, unfortunately the universe had other plans. Though there was many years a gap in which we actually talked as soon as we did again it was just like old times. We always laughed about us as kids and all the photos we shared. The amazement from you that I was able to identify your medication with just a description of a colour and the possibility it maybe started with T. As I reread our messages from the past year it’s meant a lot to know we still shared a bond, one I haven’t had with other friends. I see you with me in everything I see pink from the promise not to tell people your favourite colour was pink when we were 4, to a Holden on the street which you wore that shirt 24/7, each time I hear crazy frog with the breakdancing you used to impress me with. You are the most amazing friend I could’ve asked for to spend my childhood with and I’m forever grateful to have been apart of your life and your family’s. You are my forever and always kindy bestie and I will continue to love you each day that passes. While now it’s only in my memories I will cherish each moment I lived with you next to me

Joel, I met you through a friend, which I think is how most people did. I believe it perfectly reflects who you were to this community - a bridge between different people. You gathered around all of these wonderful people from the OCE community (Silk, Chicken, Cyanide, Freethy, Nade, Shady and the list goes on...). I think that was your biggest achievement here. it's not a coincidence you were appointed to be a manager at Revosect (rA), you were always the good side of your group, there hadn't been anyone more suitable for the role. You were optimistic, positive, chilled and friendly, even in the darkest hours. Giving up was never an option for you, even when the odds seemed against you. You remind us that we can always do and be better.

You've probably impacted and influenced my life more than anyone else over these past few years. Within just a few weeks of meeting you I made friends that will last a lifetime and found a home within your community. My stream pretty much started on a CPU and motherboard given to me by a member of your community. Once I was done with it, I shipped it off to another member in South Africa. The community really does reflect the streamer and you've fostered something so special here. Everything about you was consistent, you could be taken at face value no matter what. Your presence, opinions and words demanded respect and I learned so much from being around you. You set the standard for mental strength and at times when seeking advice from you, I couldn't help but think about how insignificant my struggles were compared to what you were battling. I'll continue to live my life with the values and lessons I learned from my short time being around you and would recommend this to anyone. It was a pleasure seeing just how much you achieved within a small timeframe, but it hurts knowing how much more was to come. You'll live forever in our minds Joel, love you mate and Rest in Peace ❤️

Henry - "Silk"

I am so truly saddened to hear about the loss of your beautiful son, brother, and grandson. May the comfort of family and the wonderful memories you have help you through. Thinking of you all.

Joel and I became close back in Year 9 of highschool. Before then I did not have the greatest of times at school and had yet to find someone I could relate to on a personal level until I started hanging out with Joel. It was incredible how he could bring people out of their shell and his thought process of others and always wishing the best of people inspired me. Joel easier became one of my closest friends and still is to this day. Like Kurtis said above, Joel set a benchmark for the type of people we need more in the world. He was so kind-heartened, welcoming and enthusiastic to everyone he met. Joel definitely made my teenage years a lot greater than they otherwise would have been. The amount of time we spent playing games together was insane. I remember rushing home to hop on the PS4 to play Destiny with him everyday which carried onto the weekends. We spent countless hours just chilling and chatting to eachother alongside a few mates. When we go back to school we would discuss our plans for the night and the loot we got the night before. I will always be fond of these moments. I think it was definitely one of the times where I felt closest to a group of friends and I will always hold these memories dearly to me. During our first year of university together, Joel decided to start streaming. At first I was wary because it seemed like everyone wanted to at the time, including myself. But I knew that if anyone could do he, he could. The passion and effort that he put in was outstanding to me and it reflected in the amazing community that he built over time. I would say that he is one of the most hardworking individuals that I have ever met. I know now that I have to keep fighting as he looks on me. Life is short and I will try my hardest to live it to the fullest with no regrets. Thanks Joel for everything you have done for me and for those in the community. I will never forget and will forever love you. Rest in peace bro. <3

Dear Joel. (part 1) Its crazy to think all these years ago, just a few kind words with your IGN and a fellow friend in the cyber space shared me you channel on youtube, and talked you up not only about your skill but warm heart and very approachable nature. Day by day, week by week, joining VC, just bantering, yet a face to your name till we shared in calls, streams and got to watch your personality shine, seen how good nature you are and a good judge of character, calling it how it was and telling us what we needed to hear, not what we wanted to at the time. You truly had a heart of gold teaching me so much about how to edit, engage with people yet alone your own personal hobbies and joys. Been able to experience not only the content creaton world with you, but the little comparative scene we did have here we built up, not only build a community but our own friendships within our group. When you shared us the news when it first came out, you truly insipred me, how god dam well you handled the cards you were dealt, i'm honestly still to this day blown away how much you inspired me, at only 21 with this news.... take life day by day and never give up till your last breath, living the best life you could, helping others even while having your own battles to face, selflessness truly was 2nd nature to you. So many years knowing each over for so long, making the most of the time that "might" of been left, we took no chances, meeting in Melbourne to take you for one hell of a time at dreamhack and share a memory ill will never forget. to say I'm shattered that when we all meet up again, we will be short one more friend when we meet in Queenstown this July....would be an understatement. All the messages on your tribute wall, how you touched everyone with your , helping other people with there battles with cancer, showing no fear, love and support to strangers, i think we can all learn a great lesson from Joel on how to make other people’s lives flourish.

Dear Joel (part 2) Boy, it will be hard to watch shows like The Witcher, knowing that was our little jam with Fuzzy, binge watching it almost all day just in time for the next session to come out and do the same again. God I’m going to miss the late night up bantering till I should of gone to bed at least 2 hours ago, only to give me anxiety when you tell me it was 3am for you. The legacy you left behind, this community, will never forget the values, qualities and takes on topics. You were not afraid to call it how it was, when needed but leave the drama that was not worth it to the side and keep moving towards every goal you set out and brought those with similar ideas in mind together and help them grow. As one friend put it, “you are remembered by not the cards you were dealt, but how you played them” and you truly played them not only in the most positive way possible, but truly beautiful to the very end. For once In my life, I still even with a week’s time to prepare for this day, I honestly don’t think there is any more words I can type, say, or speak to express how much you added to my life, influenced, enhanced and now moments will no longer be able to share in future to come, but I’m truly honored to not only know you as another person I knew over the internet, but in person for the short little time I got to share with you in Melbourne sharing that room together with the rest of us. I truly do from the depths of my heart wish you peace, you left the world a better place. I love you Joel, AKA Spy. You will be my friend till my last breath and ill never take life for granted.

Joel/Spy was one of the most positive and caring people I've ever known he had just an explosive positive energy and always made me feel happier. I wish I could of met him in real life but all I can do now is look back on the good memories of playing battlefield and watching his streams. He will leave an ever lasting impact on my life from the 2 years that I've known him. Rest in peace brother.

I have a beautiful memory of visiting Debbie Joel and Callum where we had dinner and then sang sing star together. The boys were so little and beautiful and it was a really fun night. Another night as a family we spent a magical night up the mountain house in the snow. I will treasure these memories forever. Fly high now angel. Love you xxoo

Joel was but a fledgling streamer when I first met him streaming Battlefield 5 to a handful of viewers, however it didn't take long at all to see that he was going places in that space. His level-headed nature, kind heart and positivity were all things that I (and many others) all looked up to. Seeing his growth leading up to the launch of Battlefield 2042 was an absolute sight to behold. Always chill, super welcoming and an inspiration to many of us here. Being from NZ myself it hurts a little knowing that I never got the chance to properly meet in person. The community will never be the same without you Spy, we'll miss you dearly. Rest In Peace brother <3

Fresh into high school, Joel became one of the best friends I've had in my entire life. I was the most insecure kid in the world and I had no ability to socialise with anyone and I was scared of almost everyone, but with Joel, things were chill, easy and comfortable. He was one of the first people I could actually be myself around and I'm so thankful that he was there to make my high school years x1000 better. During the funniest moments of my life where I started choking on my own laughter, Joel was there. The banter we had was always of the highest quality. Even after school hours the energy never stopped, we'd be hopping on the game most nights to chill, have fun, or even play competitively. All of the best moments in my life during high school and first year of uni were with Joel, and from him I learnt how to just simply enjoy myself. I could go on and on about memories, but Joel as a person should be a benchmark as to the types of people we need more in the world. His philosophy was very grounded in the fact that people should just get out there and do whatever they want, instead of following the norm and putting their aspirations aside for the complacent environment around them. He believed in that philosophy so strongly that sometimes it frustrated him when people were too complacent, but it was all in good faith, he just wanted greatness for everyone around him, and that's so inspiring for me. I'm inspired, and also proud of Joel for the fact that he knew building a community in the oceanic gaming space was something he wanted so badly, and so he went for it, and my god he did it. It's also incredibly heartwarming to have this community truly appreciate Joel for who he is because he deserves every single piece of it, especially with the amazing impact he's had on a lot of people in the small town of Hawera, and across the world too. He is an exceptional guy, and I will continue to carry his energy with me in my own pursuit of happiness. Rest in peace Joel.
