Te Atarangi Tau-Whittaker

Also known as "Tia"

7 April 20155 May 2023

TEU-WHITTAKER, Te Atarangi (Tia): It is the saddest of days, and it breaks my heart to write this post. Our special little warrior princess, has fought her last battle. This world was never good enough for you our precious Te Atarangi. You touched the heart of everyone you met in your short time here, and we are all better people for knowing you. We will always remember your cheeky smile, and your bubbly little laugh, especially when you were being a mischief. Your little body may have held you back, but we all saw the amazing life in your eyes. Mummy said it best, you’re running now my princess, doing your marathon. We love you forever and ever Tia. A celebration of Tia’s life will be held in William Cotton & Sons Chapel, 29 Beattie Street, Feilding on Thursday 11th May 2023 at 1.30pm, followed by private cremation. For those unable to attend, Tia’s service will be live streamed at the top of this page.

TE ATARANGI Ko Ben Ward-Smith toku ingoa. Ko au tumuaki o te kura o Lytton Street. E tū ake ana āu hei waha kōrero mo te whānau whānui o te kura, ā, kia tū mātou hei tuara mō te whānau pani o tō tātou mokopuna, Te Atarangi. No reira, Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa. Today, I represent the Lytton Street School community as we stand alongside the whānau to grieve, to remember and to celebrate the life of our little ray of sunshine Te Atarangi. As Jayne has expressed, and so many of you also, Te Atarangi was an absolute taonga. The strength that existed in her, crafted from a life that often bombarded her with challenge, was immense. With every interaction, every connection, every downturn, every success, she showed enormous resilience and fortitude, confronting these colossal events with positivity, zest and drive. Our community recognised Te Atarangi as something special and embraced her with open arms. So many of us strived to teach Te Atarangi how to achieve at school, make great friends and communicate, but in the end it was her that taught us humility, grace, humour and connection. She warmed the hearts of all whose paths she crossed. Today I want to acknowledge that for those of us left behind grief is like an emotional fingerprint - it is unique to each of us. It is a time that affects us physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. But as a community we will stand together and extend our korowai around the shoulders of each other and Te Atarangi’s whānau. Te Atarangi was confident in herself, she knew who she was and where she was going. I have no doubt that she will carry with her these traits that made her such a priceless diamond on her next journey Nā koutou e tangi, nā tātou hoki e tangi. Nā te ngākau mahaki, e mihi ana. Moe mai rā, Te Atarangi.

GONE TO SOON this was a life that hardly begun No time to find your place in the sun No time to do all you could of done But we loved you enough for a life time. No time to enjoy the world and it’s wealth No time to take life down off the shelf No time to sing the song of your self Though you had enough love for a lifetime Those who live long endure sadness and tears but you will never stuffer the sorrowing years No betrayal, no anger No hatred, no fears Just love , only love in your life time. Rest easy beautiful girl xxxxx

Miss Te Atarangi - you beautiful superstar. What devastating news it was last week. Stevie and Belinda, your amazing girl will always be held dear in my heart. She had something so special about her... She seemed to carry the Mana of a wise old woman even as a preschooler. I often left your place Stevie thinking of what an awesome teen Te Atarangi was going to be; what an amazing adult she'd become. You could see it because she was one incredible child. Stevie you always fought the good fight for your girl even when it seemed too hard - you fought entire wars for her, not just battles. Te Atarangi was so dearly (and rightly so!) adored. The world has lost a shining star, and my heart breaks to think of the loss to your beautiful family. May moments of comfort find you every day, and memories of your amazing girl linger long and bright. Te Atarangi's name and memory is seared on the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
