Funeral service held at St Andrew's Church
Beloved friend. Today we would be celebrating your birthday and as always via video call we would comment on everything you loved. you decided to leave early . I thought you were joking again! I will always remember you with love, brother and friend Murray
His eternal memory In Chania we will always remember him accompanying the New Zealand veterans, speaking with admiration about their struggle to defend the island during the Battle of Crete, but also about the hospitality they received while being chased by the Nazis. We will always remember you, friend from a distance
Murray was a class act. He was a brilliant and kind person. He was a leader and had a quirky sense of humor. I would send him daily email jokes and his responses were often unusual but thought provoking. My family and I adored him and I enjoyed his visits to my home in the states. There was something about him that you felt deep inside you. That’s why it especially hurts to know he is gone. May he have a good trip to Heaven. He will be sorely missed on earth.
"Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones, as the wind blows out the candle and fans the bonfire." Your absence does not diminish the love we have for you, and we will continue to love you and do our best to make you proud Boss! Your uniqueness will never be forgotten, and I will always remember you that way. Your life was full of adventures, laughter, ups, and downs, and I am thankful to have been a part of it. We miss you very much. Rest well boss and I look forward to sharing my experiences and stories with you when we meet again. It's not a goodbye but I'll see you again. I love you so much every day and forever. ~ 💛Rose
So long braveheart ! See you in heaven ! You will always be remembered here in Crete ! I will miss you my friend... May you rest in peace... Roula
Murray is a personal friend and goes back to WW2 era where military and pipe band common interests developed in the waikato region. Murrays Dad Len and Mum Maisry were close friends of my parents and relatives and I knew them as aunt and uncle. My Dad was a decorated soldier with NZ DIV CAV regiment and took part in the Greece and Crete battles and others from Egypt Alamein and West. The battle of Crete was of particular interest to many NZ setvicemen and Murray followed the history closely. Murray had an unwavering interest and dedication to supporting our war veterans and in particular the veterans of the Crete battle.. Murray visited Crete several times and tried to have a memorial set up there. Amongst other things he discussed with me the likely route taken by Div Cav when retreating from Pink Hill area and circuitously to Galatas. Dad was ordered to abandon his bagpipes during that manouvre and hid them in a cave so Murray contacted a local Crete friend to put the word out to perhaps locate those bagpipes. No news thus far but eighty years is a mighty long time. Murray maintained contact with Crete battle survivors until all had passed on and I was privilidged to enjoy a meal he organised with several of them not long after his unfortunate medical misadventure. We often discussed several topics over many years and I am going to miss his true frankness, humour and constancy of friendship. Rest well my old friend. With deep regret but much respect, Graham Alan Sperry
Murray my friend, you are a true gentleman (even if a bit mischievious! 🌝) I have enjoyed our many years, deep discussions and laughs. You will be missed greatly. I’ll be catching up to you soon so keep your sense of humour ready!
