Tributes

I've known you my entire life, from the earliest memories of exploring the farm, gathering eggs, looking for eels in the creeks to when you moved to Tutukaka and gave me another place to explore. Days were spent chasing quail and pheasant through the bush only to come back for some fresh cookies or slice for lunch. You cared so deeply for us kids that we'll never forget your warmth and love. I hope you're at peace xxx

My thoughts to the Rowley family. I never met Vivienne, but her soul and spirit came all the way to Europe through the words of her magnificent granddaughter. Looking forward to meeting you on the other side! Alice

Viv was always very good to me and always liked me seeing her when I was up from Auckland to discuss the latest fashion. She was an amazing cook and loved her garden

I got to know Vivienne 10 years ago when we came for our honeymoon to New Zealand. She and I discovered we had a northern irish heritage in common. I remember her baking tips on how to line a round cake tin and her instructions for using the washing machine. "Yep, that'll do," she'd say!  I experienced her dry sense of humour too when I was attacked by a weta twice on the back porch at Dolphin Bay. I thought the aliens had landed but she just laughed and laughed!  A very precious memory of Vivienne is when one Christmas during a visit she asked me, "Do you think Ken would be proud of his boys?". "Yes, I think he would be very proud", I replied. It turned out it was the anniversary of his passing.  I am thankful to have known Vivien as mother-in-law, even for this short time and despite the long distance, and I am also so grateful that we had the chance to make our most recent visit to see her once again and say 'Until next time'. With love, Judith

Aunt Vivienne. She was wonderful. A real Coles Girl.! So astute, pragmatic and capable. Such a brave and self reliant woman having endured two tragedies she carried on with farming and being a stalwart for her boys. Aunt Viv was an inspiration on how to cope when things get tough and still smile. She was fun and was our connection to our parent’s generation, now all gone. We loved visiting though infrequently as we live in the South Island, so we phoned. Viv was easy to talk to because she had a modern outlook and a lovely personality. Having trained as a teacher and a preacher, she did not let the grass grow under her feet and was always up to date with currant affairs. She laced our conversations with humour and embellished them with a chuckle or two. Long live Viv!

As a baby, you fondly called me “fatso,” a nickname that was obviously apt, yet shocked my parents. As a little kid, I tried helping you with gardening and would try to advise you on how we should do things. And as a preteen I just loved visiting you on the farm and then later at your beautiful house overlooking Dolphin Bay. Those visits have created indelible memories! Since we moved to the other side of the world, my visits have become far too infrequent, with life's busyness and all that comes with it taking over. But thankfully, we managed to connect through phone calls and later video calls. I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for being an example in so many ways! Despite life's tragedies and difficulties, you’ve consistently held onto your faith, embraced life, and continued to look and move forward. Your positivity, passion, and perseverance have profoundly impacted, aided, and inspired many of us. Without you, some of us wouldn’t even be alive! So THANK YOU!! Grandma, you have truly fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). With love, Matthias P.S. - Thankfully, your nickname for me never materialized! ;-)

Precious memories of Family visits to the farm seeing wetas, Kauri snails and trapping those possums . Rest in peace Grandma.

I remember Viv's generosity, kindness and humour. The large boxes of citrus fruit sent annually, south to her sister Marion, and how we all loved the juicy, fruit from Northland! Phone calls to Viv on the 16th July and a good catch-up of the family news. Anyone for tea. Lovely memories of Viv. Jenny.

Ken, Viv and the 4 Rowley boys (Brett, Max, Murray and Philip) on the farm at Puhi Puhi around 1963. Families ike this were to be found farming the land everywhere in NZ on smaller sized land holdings than todays. What a great childhood we experienced , what a great life living off the land, challenging as it was. I am so thankful to my parents and all the neighbours round about who made it all so memorable.

I will miss her humor and her way to say things very directly. Her delicious Anzac biscuits, homemade yogurt and preserved feijoas will always stay in my memory, as well as the fun times we had watching the news together and discussing about the news anchor‘s outfits and also our quick and refreshing swims at Kowharewa Bay. I like the idea that she has now met our dear mum in heaven again. ❤️

Though my visits have been few and far between we’ve talked of you often. You are remembered fondly for being a proudly independent woman, a woman whose compassion and no nonsense approach to life is deeply respected. Rest in peace Aunty Viv.

My mother has entered eternity. She changed her address to a heavenly mansion prepared by Jesus. I hear him say: "Well done good and faithful servant."

I do remember your delicious pots of tea, that may of “only” included this and that, were great little additives to a day(s) visit. Your delivered feijoas were always a treat that although delivered in large boxes, were met with equal parts appreciation and demolition. The little things mattered, even from a distance. Thank you :-)

Aunty Viv, I have such wonderful memories of days on the farm with you, Uncle Ken and your boys, when I was young. Amongst those memories is you showing me how to make scones. No matter how many times I've made them over the years, they don't taste or look like I remember yours being. I lost touch with you over the years as I travelled, then raised my family, but I have spoken of you often and you have always held a special place in my heart and memories. I just always imagined you'd be there when I next travelled north. Rest in peace, you can now finally join Ken and Phillip, and you will be missed. Love Belinda

Who knows this wonderful woman 94 years of life well lived and a life well loved . I think she originated from stoic stock.
