John Alexander Ferguson

Also known as "Jack"

11 March 193319 June 2023

Jack passed away peacefully on June 19 at Warkworth Hospital after losing his battle with cancer.

Loved father of Mary and John, husband of the late Joan.

Originally from Liverpool, he is survived by his younger brother Peter, who lives in Canada.

Jack and his family have had a long association with the Warkworth area, initially though a bach at Buckletons Bay. In 1976, the family moved permanently to Warkworth, where Jack established a successful building business. He was also a keen yachtsman and spent many happy days sailing around his beloved Kawau Bay.

A private cremation has been held and we will celebrate Jack's life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Warkworth Hospice.

Dear "Uncle" Jack, I will always remember my family's visits to stay with you and Joan when we were kids. Sorry that us three kids were a bunch of snot rags - I fear we enjoyed ourselves more than you and Joan enjoyed our company. You gave us our first boating experiences, first fishing experiences, freshly-fried fish, and some amazing childhood memories. Last time I saw you was on my honeymoon, more than 23 years ago now, when I was much better behaved, and able to appreciate your stories and hospitality better.

It was quite an honor to meet great uncle Jackie when I was younger. Heading out to the other side of the world at 18 was scary, but coming to a beautiful and welcoming home made it the bit easier. I was consumed by his tales of adventure and journeys when he set out from Liverpool so long ago. I admired his practicality, his kindness, his appreciation for a good meal and quality wine or whiskey to follow. I will remember my time in New Zealand fondly. All my lovin to Mary and John. James

Dear Jack, we will miss you so much. You were a lifelong friend of the late Charles Sharples back in the Liverpool days. Later on you both came out to NZ and settled here. You and Joan were both good friends to Lorraine and honorary Uncle and Aunt to Ella and Paul from the day they each were born. I remember the many homes you built and how Joan always said that you never needed to redecorate your home. You just moved into another new house! We will miss coming to visit you Jack. You never let us go home empty handed. There was always something fr6 the garden. Love to Mary and John. From the Sharples family - Lorraine, Ella Paul, Kim and Tomas.

Remember meeting Jack many years ago in Liverpool, with auntie Joan, when my mum was alive (your sister Jean). Such along time ago and Ged and I had no Children then. Our son James who is now 30 spent a lot of time with uncle Jack when he was 18 and living in New Zealand. James cherished his time spent in New Zealand and getting the opportunity to sail with Jackie, and we felt we got to know more about him through James. He was an amazing man and had a very interesting and wonderful life. Gérard and I were lucky enough to spend a month in New Zealand in February of this year and got to spend some quality time with uncle Jackie. So glad we got this opportunity and learned more about his amazing life and adventures. What a wonderful man. God bless Gillian and Gérard.

For Jack, who we will always remember for the warm welcome he and Joan extended to us! As new arrivals in New Zealand with a young family we felt a bit lost and homesick! We had trips on Jacks launch visiting Kawau island, swimming and fishing in the clearest sea water I have ever seen, taking home supper to be cooked up by Jack, followed by Joan’s lovely cake! This was all a wonderful and new experience for us and will be always treasured Janet, Peter, and the family .

To a wonderful uncle who introduced me to the joy of sailing and perfect childhood memories of playing Swallows and Amazons with my NZ cousins. Lots of sand, sun burn, bbqs and Joan’s amazing pies and cakes. Thanks for feeding and indulging your starving nieces when we turned up after a year of travel and being broke in 1989. I’m so glad all my lot got to hang out with you in Adelaide and that I was able to see you last October. A very special man who will remain in heart.

Mary Lou and Karl Horvat and family

Jack you were such a happy cheerful man who loved your wife and childten so much and were so loved in turn. It was humbing watching such a functional family. I remember all the repairs you made to the BBQ over the years insisting it could be fixed and did so. So many houses you built over 30 years ago in Warkworth are in such good condition because of your quality workmanship. Your adventures sailing here and the stories you told. I will remember your kindness and smile it was so joyful. I will forget the drinks you mixed Ouzo and Gin do not taste nice and the generous spitit to mixer quantities so you only needed one drink. Gone from our sight but not from our memories
