In the late 70's my family had the dairy on Devon Street where Abrahams is now. It was called Murdock's Dairy. My mum and Dad owned it and May Medley was a regular, she used to sit in the doorway and chat to mum and dad. I knew her as May Medley, never May, and I can see her in my minds eye with denim shorts to her knee, a t shirt, and her hand bag crossing her body. Without fail she would have a fag in her mouth, a pair of wrap around sunnies on her face and spectacles on her head. When she laughed her big laugh I was always perplexed by the gap between her front teeth and her high cheekbones. I always thought "that's what happiness look's like". I thought she was very skillful because she could grip her cigarette between her lips, scrunch up her eye and peel open the coke can tab, all at the same time! Her pride and Joy was Jody and sometimes we went around to their place on Courtenay Street, up the three steps onto the steep path (I was about 8) up to the house. I loved playing under, and in, the huge tree by the house, that lawn was always green and we loved going there to play with Jody. We moved away when I was 10. I remember bumping into May Medley in town about 20 years ago and I recognised her, she was blown away that she had had such an impact on our family, and on me. Your mum was strong Jody, and you were her everything. It was a pleasure to know you May Medley x
